This thing is basically a great big stupidfight.

Stupid = people who adhere to the interpretation of islam that not only is an image of Muhammad prohibited, but those who disagree with this interpretation must be killed or suppressed.

Also stupid = people who go out of their way to provoke people in the aforementioned group for no other reason and roll around in the stupid dirt with them.

    Have fun stupids.

C'mon man, this is nothing like that. This is s bunch of smug Euros that not only look down on religion in general but Islam in particular. It's part of a concerted effort in Europe to embarrass Muslims. It's happening all over Europe.

    Define "they".

Continuing with my examples... Is this offensive?

You are wrong. In the first place, the person who thought up the idea was American, and it was done directly in response to people threatening violence against South Park for depicting of Santa pretending to be Mohammed in a bear costume. But I'm sure its easier and more cognitively 'neat' to write them off by thinking of them as bigots, however.

I put this in another thread:

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z7ok4njJXI8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z7ok4njJXI8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I think the distinction one can draw is that women walking down the street and not being raped for it is something that they'd normally want to or be able to do as a general matter.

Making caricatures of Muhammad is not something that appears to be in the normal course of daily activity for most. (not saying it should be banned, of course).

My problem is that the images may offend those that don't believe and using violence and intimidation to act out at their offense. Why do something that will offend those folks? Plenty of folks could be offended by the cartoons, but don't believe in violence. Probably far more than would use extremism to censor and stop the images.

That's needless collateral damage, and it's being an a-hole.

nobody who isn't a rapist would be offended or upset by take back the night marches.

They used to do one right in front of my apartment in St. Louis. Bugged the crap out of me. I couldn't get in or out of my apartment for like two hours.

How about Selma freedom march? There was a very limited number of racist murdering KKK bastards to whom that was a response, but there was a much larger volume of otherwise decent law abiding racists who just didn't want white and black people hanging out together.

In order to respond to the murderers, the civil rights people offended a whole lot of law abiding racists.

Yeah, play it naive and innocent by regurgitating PR crap from the government. I'm not going to get into this debate with an amateur.

It's not just me alone, it's me and the rest of the world. And with our powers combined, I am Captain Planet. Sweden is such a picturesque, liberal, and peaceful place - yet Islamic fundamentalists find a way to start barking and throwing slaps because they've been brainwashed to have nothing else in their life besides a medium of mass control.

    Ethiopia - Eritrea
    Israel - Palestine
    India - Pakistan
    Serb Muslims / Turkey
    Azerbaijan region

What do all major global conflicts have in common?

It's easy to live life like a hippie and talk about love and peace and not reciprocating against actions, but that's not how this world works. You fight intimidation by standing up for the victim and in this case the victim is free speech. I'm sick and tired of Muslims getting defensive about this topic and taking themselves as seriously as they do. The truth is they won't accomplish anything until they start fighting this battle internally and re-evaluate their own religion, whether they want to accept it or not.

It reminds me of the young angry teenager Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye, lashing out at the world for his own shortcomings and calling everyone phonies when he's the biggest hypocrite of all, but is just too naive and defensive to accept it.

Sounds like the smug Americans who laugh at people who attend WNBA games. It's all part of a concerted effort to alienate homosexuals in America, and it's sickening.

LOL, you purposely listed conflicts that only involve Muslims.

    Here's a better (although incomplete) list....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_political_conflicts

It's OK for Muslims to be offended at the cartoons, but not OK act out violently. While it is legal it's not really OK for law abiding folks to be racist. I just don't see the parallel.

You do realize that Islam is involved in ALL of those except the Mexican Drug War and Irish conflict? The African conflicts are due to Muslim Darfur, the South Thailand insurgency was due to Islamic separatists (alienating as usual) - I mean it's just so predictable. And showing trademark characteristics of an overly defensive personality, you nitpicked at one small part of my post and ignored the rest about internal reform.

I suggest piping down and letting Mathloom do the talking, he's the informed one here and even he's helpless against the brainwashing and zombie like attitude of religious zealots.

I can't watch that now but from what I understand the violence started with a Danish filmmaker in 2005 or so and then with Danish cartoons in 2006 after that. That's when the south park episode was censored.

MUhammad(PBUH) is not depicted because early Muslims feared that by putting pictures of him in mosques that people would worship him instead of Allah, which is blasphemy.

Stupid: SamFisher who does not understand that this initiative is a direct response to Islamist craziness that led to 139 deaths while protesting a freaking cartoon and that led to Comedy Central going out of its way to censor almost a full episode of a funny program that is designed to offend somewhat.

Stupid: Saying "oh, don't provoke people who say someone should be killed over a cartoon" (which is exactly what SamFisher did above).

By saying "don't draw cartoons because you could provoke the crazies" (which is exactly what SamFisher did above) you expose your cluelessness.
