Max Contract Players: Where does Steve rate?

    But then there are guys like Steve Nash and a few other rookie/soph point guards that look more promising than Steve right now!

    WOW, thanks Smegg. Good thread. Looking at those numbers, I too don't feel that he is over paid, and comparing him to some guys around him even in his worst season he is doing pretty good.

    And I thought Doctors were overpaid!!! Who makes this kind of money? Rock stars, Pop stars, Actors.... and that is about it. Maybe a few Fortune 500 CEO's. Our society's values are really screwed up. Many of the K-12 teachers in this State make in the low 20's or less, just had their benefits cut by the Texas Legislature, and put up with abuse in classroom on a daily basis. The NBA players ought to thank God every day that they are not WalMart stockers, where they would likely be if they couldn't play.

    Its scary how alike we thijnk Smeg...I was thinking about doing somthing like this over the weekend to go against the constant complaints about our "max player" criticisms.

    I thought that once everyone saw how many losers make just as much if not more money than Francis...maybe we could quit using that argument to bash him.

    He may not be exactly earning all of his money this year...but considering how many other people get paid the same amount and dont produce near as much...I dont think it is bad that we made sure one of our stars got what is due him.

    Same goes for Yao...even at the amount he is putting up right now, if his contract was up for renewing..I would not b**** if they offered him max also.

    I feel in the long run, they will both be worth it.

    Can’t help but notice that Steve is one of only five players on that list without any playoff experience (Rahim, Jamison, Brand, Illgauskas the others). I know that this is just due to some bad circumstances for Steve, but as far as playoff experience, he’s a little behind on the learning curve. To me, that drops him a little below Allen, Marbury, B. Davis, Webber, Marion and a few others.

    I’d say he’s either near the bottom of the 2nd tier stars (J. O’Neal, Carter, Marbury, etc.) or at the top of the 3rd tier stars (Houston, Wallace, Jamison, etc.)

    I was just thinking about this subject last night, only I was too lazy too actually look up contracts. I had finally got tired of hearing Steve wasn't worth his money, and I thought about posting a list of max players. What's even more interesting is how many players on that list whose teams won't make the playoffs.

    Marbury- hasn't been traded 4 times for nothing
    Kobe- for more than one reason
    Baron- just because of injuries
    Jamison- HAHAHA!

    I was thinking the same thing. Seattle doesnt even think Rashard is the best forward on their team, Mashburn plays 30 games a year lately, Marion is good, but not great, Jamison is a tweener, Baron jacks up a trillion shots a game and has back spasms, Kobe i cant comment on.......Bibby is close.....marbury i still think is a better player than Steve though....so is Webber, when he plays.
    What steve lacks that puts him a seat behind others is leadership and ability to take over a game, at least this season. But i think once he sniffs the playoffs, he'll understand what its all about :cool:

    It's difficult to really make a comparison w/o term of contract in hand and age of player.

    Steve is in first year of his deal and is relatively young which makes him an even better value that many on the list.

    Was Yao on that list or did I miss him?

Some are on last year or near ending contractscontracts and will soon become more expensive, i.e., Nash. As a PG is Francis giving the Rockets bang for the buck?     That's the reason I'd actually want him. Marion is a stud who doesn't demand the ball. He isn't necessarily the leader on the team, but he plays hard and plays consistently well.

    My list of people I'd CONSIDER over Francis:
    Kobe (maybe not)
    Marbury (say what you will. Starbury's got mad game)
    T-Mac
    Kidd
    Baron Davis (playing better than Francis this year)

    KG
    Jermaine O'Neal
    Dirk Nowitzki
    Elton Brand
    S. Marion

    Tim Duncan


    I thought about starting a thread about C-ROY's Francis vs. Brand but never got around to it. I'm still not 100% sure I'd take Brand over Francis.

    Marion is very good, I agree. But the Rockets really need a playmaker like Pierce or Tmac, and Steve is closer to that than Marion. We'll end up with too many guys who can't create. On the other hand, Marion does get in the open court and play D, 2 things Steve sorely lacks.

    Baron Davis yes, if he can stay healthy.

    Brand is a tough one but I'd have to say yes. That would be one hell of an inside tandem with Yao.
