He'd be my ultimate hero if he accomplishes it. Anyone could win me over by doing that.

That would be awesome if he just went around the whole system and did it himself!

Money is the only reason the BCS is alive. If he can take that excuse away, there is no choice but to have playoff system.

If every other sport in every other division can have playoffs, so can D-I football.

I'd support it but good luck getting it done.

I still think the simplest solution is to take the top 4 or 6 (two teams get a bye), in the BCS and have a playoff. They could still incorporate all the big name BCS bowls as the playoff games, and keep the rest of the 40 other money-making bowl games around. It also ensures that the regular season games will have no loss of meaning as teams will still usually have to have no more than 1 or 2 losses to get in.

If he is able to get it done then more power to him. I hope he is successful!

He doesn't have enough cash on his own to make it worthwhile. He will need major outside investors and I have a feeling the egos of college presidents won't be particularly excited about having to deal with Mark Cuban's antics.

You don't think ESPN wouldn't happily jump on board as a partner to make it work? There is endless money involved in a playoff system, and college Presidents - especially with cash-strapped budgets - will happily do whatever they can to get a hold of that money if Cuban makes it available.

If it's that easy, why is there still no college football playoff?

Basically, the Pac10 and Big10. They didn't want to give up the Rose Bowl matchup several years back when there was a more intensive discussion. I believe either 3 or 4 of the BCS conferences were supportive of the idea, but it only takes a small opposition to kill it. And, the bowls are obviously against it and they are NCAA partners.

But that's the beauty of working outside the system and offering more money. You don't have to face all the same resistance forces as you do inside the system and you appeal to pure financial motives.

I wish it was someone else trying to make this move so I can cheer for its success. Since it's Mark Cuban, I hope he fails miserably and loses a lot of money to a point where he has to sell the Mavs.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting this will work. Cuban will have all sorts of obstacles of his own. But it's a completely different and unique path to creating a college football playoff.

IF it's still going to be based on "ranking" and "AP" versus "COACHES" polls, it's going to be the same emmeffin' problem.

They're students. Academics are first (unless you're from USC :p). Don't make students work more than they have to.

I know, I know. It's not always like that.

Um, because the money, power, and influence is concentrated in the hands of a few conference commissioners, university presidents, and athletic directors... and why the hell would they want to give up their gigantic slice of the pie that is the BCS (6 BCS conferences split 90% of the BCS money, while the other 5 conferences split the remaining 10%...) for a more open competition system with more equal revenue distribution that would come with a playoff?

It's all about money dude, it is hard to get somebody to understand something when their bank account depends on them not understanding it.

That was my entire point. Thanks for reiterating it. How is Mark Cuban going to change this situation?

If you've got an entire situation with a group of people that have fought to keep the status quo for years, why in the world would they agree to team up with a guy that seems to do nothing but fight the status quo?

If he is able to invent a playoff system that generates just as much money, if not more, for those power brokers, then he will have succeeded.

If not, I doubt they jump ship.

However, political unrest between the bodies that currently makeup the BCS could contribute to the development of a playoff.

Everybody in the BCS club loves it until it takes its turn of biting them in the ass (see UT two years ago).
