I'd say no too if i'm not as popular like lebron. Especially the way all these former athletes going broke.
This (although I'm not so sure about the $8M starting salary part). Objectively speaking, Haslem would be the PERFECT power forward for the Nets. He is a top-notch defender and would be a phenomenal mentor for Derrick Favors, who himself could become a dominant defensive force in this league one day. Subjectively speaking, I don't want to see Prokhorov throw his billions at Scola as the only remaining "quality PF" on the market. Still, at the end of the day, I think Haslem might actually take less to stay with the Heat. He is still (at least until last week) the second most beloved member of that team. He feels a deep sense of loyalty to the Heat, especially after they "took care of him" with that fairly large contract they gave him a few years ago. This will be a VERY interesting free agent decision. Perhaps the most important remaining free agent decision in the league this summer.
haslem would be stupid if he doesnt accept the offer. few ppl will remember him after his playing days are gone anyway so make the most money while u still can.
I think the willingness or unwillingness to get into a bidding war for Haslem may also be some indication as to what they would be willing to pay Scola. If they are not going to spend more than $20 mil/3 years for Haslem, I doubt they go much higher for Scola.
I know. I'm talking about teams. As a championship competitor competing against every team in the league, this team helps the Rockets more than it hurts them. Sure we would like to see him end up somewhere not in our division, but as long as it's anywhere besides Miami.
The Nets can outbid the Mavs right? I don't think this is over. I think Haslem will be cheaper than Scola, and Scola is likely to be matched so the Nets will probably make a better offer to Haslem. If the Nets make him a better offer than the Mavs and a starting job, he would be a complete idiot to return to the Heat as a backup for the minimum.
The Heat have carved out about $3-4M in cap room to retain Haslem. Part of the "discount" that Wade, Lebron and Bosh took. Basically, ~$8M or so in extra cap room to sign Mike Miller and probably either Derek Fisher or Haslem.
Why can't he just be loyal? Why can't he want to win? This guy has made enough money in the league. I would say he's an idiot to turn down his first major contract, but he's set now, no reason to bash him if he takes less to win. As for this offer....i'd say they are overpaying him. This is a nice salary to start, but not to back up Dirk freakin Nowitzki. Whats he going to get, 10-15 mins? That's also why i wouldnt worry too much about it. He won't make the mavs that much better because when he's playing it means Dirk is resting. If Dirk AND Haslem is in, then it means Marion is resting.
Haslem could be a nice addition for the Mavs and the contract they're offering is actually too good to be true for Haslem. I always liked his style of playing ... sign that deal, Haslem!
sounds like his agent did just the right thing, say he'll take minimum for the heat and watch the anti heat offer him the full mle....that guy just earned his money.
