Loyola Maramount is a small college in California I believe that use to run...run...and run some more. Paul Westphal was the coach and they were beyond even the tempo the Mavs play at. They had 2 great players, one of which, Hank Gathers, died during his senior year. His best friend Bo Kimble led the team to the sweet 16 that year before finally succumbing. A great story, and a very fun game to watch...they made the Mavs look like turtles. 155-160 points a game was not uncommon. DaDakota
man i wish i was older than 7 or 8 when loyola was tearin' it up like that. they have a ton of the offensive records for the ncaa. them and oklahoma with billy tubbs coaching. some of the stats are insane. of course all the records seem to come against powerhouses like american university or international something or other. anyway, the mavs kings game kicked ass tonight. hope all the rest are like this.
I hate the Jazz... Oh, sorry...All these "I hate" posts were bringing back those great memories. carry on...
This is slowly becoming a more and more hypocritical reason to dislike a team considering how little support the Rockets have been getting since they dropped from yearly contender status. I base my hate on the players on a team, fans be damned. The Mavs have many good players, and none of them do things that piss me off, play dirty, or set bad examples for young kids. I root for a team that succeeds with those types of players. And the fact that they play a style of basketball that is a LOT of fun to watch is just an added benefit.
Gathers was actually considered more talented than Bo Kimble. Kimble was drafted higher than expected that summer on the strength of their NCAA run. At 6'5" Kimble was a little undersized for the NBA and had only marginal success. Both Gathers and Kimble were from Philly and there is a movie about the life of Hank Gathers, but for now the title eludes me. It was something corny like "The Hank Gathers Story". Worth seeing. DaDakota is correct - LM made the Mavs and Kings look like slow motion. Back on topic - I don't have a stong preference for either team, but how can it be said that the Mavs have a better chance of beating the Lakers when in the same breath it is mentioned they can't stop Divac? The Mavs on court body language doesn't appear that much different from the Kings from my seat.
I think it has more to do with the other players on the team. No one can stop Shaq no matter how many guys you put on him. He will always get his numbers. The rest of the team is a different story. Take Shaq, and Divac out of the equation, and the Kings have a better team. If the Mavs can stop or seriously out score the other people on the Lakers (besides Shaq) then they have a good chance. Other than Shaq the Mavs match up pretty good with the Lakers.
I think the Kings match up better versus the Lakers and can better exploit the Laker's lack of interior defense in the 4 spot. Factor in the Kings home court advantage, I think they have a much better chance than the Mavs (or anyone else) in beating the Lakers.
Umm....have you heard of a guy named Robert Horry? In playoffs he is clutch and plays bad ass defense.
Dr of Dunk, you almost got it right... Dallas sucks, therefore I'm forced to hate their teams. But I wish Cuban owned the Rockets (or would give Les 100 million bucks from his wallet to spend on the Rocks). Make more money, Les!
But the Kings have Webber. Advantage Mavs. Webber doesn't take it to the hole in the playoffs. He plays passive. This will cause LA's supposed lack of D at the 4 spot to not be a problem. Also, Van Exel is a Laker-Killer. Always good to have one of those around. Just more weapons for Dallas, I think, and their best players don't have a propensity to choke.
I agree that there are some bandwagon fans in Dallas but what team does not have bandwagon fans. I am sure that every one was a Patriot fan in Boston before they went to the Super Bowl. I am sure that every one in St. Louis just loved the Rams before they became good. I am sure every one cheered there hearts out for the Arizona Diamondbacks before they won the World Series last year. The sad thing is that this post is coming from Houston fans, who many believe are the biggest bandwagon fans in sports. I am sure that if the Rockets go deep in the playoffs next year, your attendance and fan support will probably increase too. What happen to all those fans that supported the Rockets when they were winning championships? How come they don't support the Rockets as much as they did then? Does that mean that you guys have bandwagon fans? Does that mean that every other city should now hate Houston? It is hard to cheer very loud for your favorite team when they don't go to the playoffs for an extremely long time and don't put a competitive team out on the court. But I guess Mavs fans should have still come on message boards and bragged about there team winning 13 games in one year. Yeah that would have looked nice though. Then we would have looked like the stupidest fans. I guess Mavs Fans just can't win.
I think dfn is on the right track. I mean not everyone in the world is a hardcore sports fanatic. There are some like us, who will follow a team no matter what the record. The majority though, desire or need a good product to cheer on. They want entertainment and something like the Rockets are not entertaining. These are the fans that come out when teams are pretty exciting to watch and I dont think there is anything wrong with that.
What pisses me off is when they claim to be hardcore and are not. These are the fans that everyone can do without, and many of those will roll around when the pastures get green again. As for me I have never liked anyone but the Rocks. And I never will like another NBA team. If we ever get better this got has to be part of it.
This game is exciting. The two teams together have about the same number of turnovers than the Rockets average all by themselves. If anyone is displaying poor defense, maybe it's because these are the two top scoring teams in the NBA?
Well, looks like Cuban's cowbell experiment didn't work very well... Chris Webber in game 3: 31 points, 15 boards, 15-26 field goals, zero turnovers Now, the $64,000 question. Is this an aberration, or will he take over this series? If Webber continues playing like that, Kings might take this one in six. Sacramento simply has too many weapons. Pollard, Christie, Bibby, or Stojakovic are all capable of scoring 25 on any given night.
