no, i don't. i don't think you can throw it out entirely, though. particularly if the guy has other question marks. I agree, 40 time shouldn't be end all/be all...but it's certainly an indicator. the question is, how far would this guy have fallen if he weren't taken by the Broncos? just because Denver drafted him doesn't mean Clarett still isn't what all those who avoided him think he is.
I think SOMEBODY would have taken a chance on him early in the second day. Not everybody is the feature back on a national championship team...
40 time is overrated in terms of running backs. Teams are much more interested in how fast a back can get to the right hole, in terms of choosing the best lane and how fast he can get there. Cedric Benson also had a particularly slow forty time for a guy going as the fourth pick overall. As far as Clarett is concerned, I can't believe some of you guys thought he wouldn't get drafted. No matter how you feel about him, he is still a very good football player and already has a lot of the on field intangibles that separates good college backs from good pro backs, like picking up the blitz.
wait, don't get me wrong. i have no idea how the guy will turn out. if anyone can "make" a RB, it's Denver. and i didn't think the guy would go undrafted. i'm just hearing a few denver fans saying very loudly that they wished their team hadn't picked him. of course, that happens all the time. i wanted Harold Miner.
I was referring to a thread that popped up around the time of the combine about his 40 time. Some guys were predicting he wouldn't get drafted like Jim Rome. Honestly, I thought he would get drafted but not that high, but at the same time it doesn't surprise me.
