By saying an 18 year-old can be eligible for the NFL draft isn't forcing the NFL to allow them to work for them.

If Clarett were to be drafted then he would be one of the best football players in the world. The problem with the NBA and NFL is that they haven't taken the time to construct a developmental system like baseball has with the minor leagues. The NFL uses college as a farm system instead of finding the best talent and developing it like MLB. If the NFL wanted better competition they'd just field minor league teams and develop/coach their talent until it's ready for the NFL. It's not the responsibility of college kids to maintain the "integrity" of the NFL by not taking the money they'd surely be getting if they were allowed into the draft. If Clarett or anyone else wants into the draft they should be allowed. It's not Clarett's fault that the NFL is poorly equipped to deal with that possibility.

Benson will be a better NFL RB than Clarett. He doesn't have the attitude, and if you have an attitude, no teams will want you.

First of all it's National Champion Buckeyes

And second I just heard from a decent source the NCAA will announce today/tomorrow it's a 2 game suspension. So better back-track fast!

The difference is that if an 18 year old walked into IBM they can say, "sorry we don't want to hire you" and all is O.K. If an 18 year old wants to be in the NFL draft and they say no, they can be sued. If a player like Clarett successfully sued the NFL and was not drafted, the next step would probably be a successful collusion suit.

But if an 18 y/o walked into IBM and said I would like to apply for a job and they said no without considering him they could be sued (at least giving him an application and them accepting his resume).
It's the same as an 18 y/o applying for the draft. Noone has to take him, but he shoudl be able to apply.

That is not correct because IBM can say 'college degree required' in their job description before allowing anyone to apply for that job and the NFL can't. Why are companies allowed to do this and not the NFL?

In other words, regardless of how qualified you are as an 18 year old, the lack of a college degree is a perfectly acceptable excuse for IBM to not even accept your job application.

So every person IBM hires meets all the specifications in the requirement? So if IBM talks to anyone without those specifications they would be breaking the law right (sinc eyou are saying it's a law that you maust have a degree for certain jobs)?

No. They can post a job in which they need elite personnel (sort of like the NFL) and say that a degree is required. I am not talking about all positions.

Where did I say it was the law that you MUST have a degree for certain jobs? What I said was, that it was perfectly legal for IBM to post a job requiring a college degree. Go look through the ads in the classifieds. You will see jobs ads that say things like 'college degree required', 'BA', 'MBA', etc.

I am asking a serious question and am looking for an explanation. Why can companies routinely require college degrees for particular jobs, but the NBA and NFL can't (we'll leave MLB out of the equation because their anti-trust exemption is a whole other issue).

It's not about degrees it's about age discrimination.

Can IBM say we only want a 21 y/o-25 y/o college degreed consultant. No.

O.K., then change the argument to this. Pretend this ad exists for a fortune 500 company:

Wanted: Computer programmer. Degree not required, but at least 3 years of college necessary. Salary negotiable.

This qualifies as a perfectly acceptable ad for IBM.

    Now look at the following:

Wanted: Running Back. Degree not required, but at least 3 years of college necessary. Salary negotiable.

Currently this is acceptable in the NFL. Why is there a threat of a winnable lawsuit against the NFL if Clarett decides he wants to join, but there is not a threat against the fortune 500 company?

It's about criteria deemed neccessary to fill a position as seen fit by the employer.

If IBM needs to fill a position, they want to hire the most qualified person for the job. It's impossible to interview every single person interested in the job - with or without a degree. That process would eat resources at an alarming rate. The best chance is to filter the incoming applicants, by proposing a minimum requirement. In this case, a college degree is one of them. Sure, you could find someone without a degree that could be THE best man for the job. But if you opened the door to those without a college degree, you could also be wasting your time interviewing the next door kid who was really good with DOS.

You're the one basing your opinion on a young man from a news story.

    It's winnable in either case.

Also keep in mind the NFL doesn't say 3 years of college required just you can not enter until your HS graduating class is at it's third year. So what if a football player takes 18 credit hours each term, including summer and is classified as a Junior before teh draft his sophmore year, would teh NFL accept him, nope they only want certain ages. Pure age discrimination.

Because running a football has nothing to do with anything you learned in the classroom beyond being able to read a playbook.

The physical demands to play in the NFL, or any pro football for that matter, negates the potential success of any kind of farm system. In 2000, the NFLPA compiled figures that showed the average career length for an NFL player is 3.2 years. Sure, you would have players in a farm system that would be well coached enough and escape injury to be an NFL-caliber player, but the cost outweighs the result. The NBA started a developmental league, which I think is a great idea.

    It's early, I don't understand what you're getting at.

I form opinions on various subjects by processing the information I've gathered from various sources. A news story is one such source. What's your point? If it's any consolation, his demeanor on the field, his reported comments, his challenging of the rule, and his latest incident re: his booty also contributed to my opinion.

Can you understand that it's about the filtration of proposed inferior talent? The 'three year' rule assumes those three years were spent in a college football program. Just as a degree assumes the applicant has the mental resources to take, store, and process information in a fashion that satisfies a recognized educational institution.

First of all, he hasn't challenged the rule yet, second of all how does accepting an oral exam from your professors or accepting a car, which we don't know the complete details about classify you as an assmunch.

And when he does challenge the rule, it has nothing to do with being arrogant. If people on a message board who don't even know me was calling me an assmunch because my life is in the public eye and I'm not even getting paid yet, I would go for the money too. At least then, I would get some compensation for all the scrunity I would be getting.

As far as his demeanor on the field, I have no idea what you are referring to.
