Jesus, with the Rockets kinda being out of it this past year,I must not have watched enough NBA in general. I honestly had to look this guy up.
OK now I'm getting scared... Matthews literally had one good defensive season and he gets that much? What will Lowry and Scola fetch? They have to be fuming all these scrubs getting so much dough.
sometimes its a good thing to go undrafted and get paid after an impressive 1st year.. Matthews is going to make more money than anyone in his draft class!
Matthews was kick ass this year. I hate that he was part of the jazz last year but the guy played some solid d and was a solid scorer. I actually think this is a great deal for him although this type of money shouldn't be payed for back ups.
Mathews is the reason Ronnie Brewer got traded. I wonder now that Brewer is back on the open market If the Jazz will try and get him back. If Von wafer was not such a knuckle head this could have been him getting a pay day like this.
So do the Jazz match and leave themselves with little cap room (LT) to use their MLE or do they try to sign a big like Haslem with their full MLE to replace Boozer? Blazers are a better team if they get Matthews. If he doesn't turn into a Marquis Daniels for them. That said they'll have too many guards on their roster unless they deal Rudy or let him leave for Spain?
Maybe the Blazers have some advanced metrics a la Morey? The guy looked good at times but like you said, one season... Maybe owners and GMs know something about the upcoming CBA negotiations that is prompting all this. I thought the expectations were that dollars were gonna get tighter which would discourage the kinds of contracts we're seeing but maybe there's something else to it that defies common perception. I know that makes no sense but neither do these ridiculous contracts we're seeing.
