I think it will depend on what we get for Carr and how we handle the draft. As mentioned earlier...in essence, we traded a mid 1st round pick for Schaub...not sure if he is worth it given that his on field performance, despite it being minimal, has been average at best. Not sure, but I think I read that he's lost both games that he's started. Also has completed barely more than half the passes he's thrown. Yes, he has the tools to be good, but he can end up being David Carr...or worse. The jury is out on him because he hasnt had enough play time to truly give us an answer to the question. At this point, I just want to trade Carr for a first day pick...and trade down from #10.
Fun fact: Schaub finished his college career with the 2nd highest career completion percentage (67%) in NCAA Divison I-A history. Hey, just saying... I think this is a good deal all around, especially since it signals the end of the David Carr era. (Carr, BTW, is now eligible to join Stevie Franchise in the Houston Lovable Losers Hall of Fame.) I remember hanging out with Schaub at the NFL Rookie Premiere event back when he was drafted, and he seemed to be a really nice guy (unlike, say, jerkface Joey Harrington). I hope he succeeds in Houston.
Buddy of mine was an undergrad at UVa. around the time Schaub was there. He said Schaub was kinda slow and didn't have much arm-strength throwing down the field. Great pocket guy and great at passes less than 15 yards. Unless any of that has changed, well, he's still probably better than Carr.
NOT REALLY GIVING UP TWO 2's....JUST GIVING UP ONE 2....If we didn't pick up Schuab we would probably waste that 2 this year on a QB that wont be as good and NFL ready as Schaub. PLUS WE WILL GET SOMETHING FOR CARR... THIS IS A GOOD TRADE....
Isn't this the same, exact thing we were saying about the Battier trade? Please wait until see how everything works out with your own eyes before making judgements. I think we will be ok if we can gain a pick or 2 (trading Carr, etc)
Great deal - This is exactly what I wanted. Those of you who doubt Schaub are in for a pleasant surprise. Our offensive line is finally recovering from the Bosselli debacle. That said the Texans will most likey shore it up with a pick, but not a 1 IMO. Let's go get Leon Hall with # 10. It's going to be interesting to see which side of the ball is stronger this year. We are on our way. ima - I know your not happy presently, but hopefully Matt will change your mind over time. If we play our cards right I believe this team might have a legit shot at the playoffs...definitely year after next.
Kinda sucks that teams now know that we have to trade Carr...thereby causing his value to decrease. I really hope we can get a 3rd for him.
We'll see what the Texas can swing for Carr before making a decision on the pick, but right now it seems a little too much. As I said in the Carr thread I thought maybe a third rounder seemed to be enough, but one second would not have been too bad. Don't the Texans have two seconds this year?
Nope. The 2nd second round pick will be next years. I'm 50/50 on this trade, I like that the Texans are going in a different direction from Carr, but this is a lot to give up for a guy who's production is relatively unknown. I think the best case scenario for the Texans is to trade down and pick up additional picks. Also, I have my fingers crossed for a 3rd rounder for Carr.
I am a huge Matt Shaub fan and am all for this deal. I believe Matt Shaub would be a starter on a lot of teams but they had a QB/RB on the team with a ridiculous contract which is why they were debating moving Vick to RB, and put Shaub at starting QB. I like his pocket pressence, I like his arm, and will be a HUGE upgrade over Carr. Now Texans need some more O-Line help, and get a decent WR to compliment Andre. I am not a die hard Texans fan, and usually bash every decision they make, but I applaud this move.
I would say quite a few people on the board are very pleased with Battier, but still feel that we gave up too much for him (myself included).
I think it's a nice deal. I feel like they gave up too much BUT.. 1) They are in a desperate situation to get a good QB with no other real options (especially to play this season) and they were probably in a bidding war with a couple of teams thus having to offer more. 2) It takes A TON to get a good QB, let alone one that is projected around the league to be a good starter. There really wasn't any way around giving up a lot for this deal. Schaub is REALLY well-regarded amongst the league and should be an upgrade over Carr in "shell-shockness" alone. Kubiak has done wonders with QBs iin his career, except the one that was was past the point of no return, so let's hope he has some magic with Schaub and we get something special. I'm not expecting a Tom Brady, Joe Montana, or even a perenial pro-bowler, etc; but I think he could become a very good starter that could HELP lead this team to better times. Let's at least look at it this way, everything I have read and heard about the guy, he is a VERY hard worker, puts in all the extra time on the practice field and in the video room, and has a real desire to be great. That's already a HUGE upgrade over what Carr brought to the table who cared more about how much publicity his lack of a haircut would get.
