The worst one on that floor tonight was Bayless. Scola yeah he was bad too. I don't believe Lowry Battier or Hayes flop though. Maybe if you are ridiculously ghetto and never believe there to ever be such a thing as a charge.

The charge is all the defensive player has to protect himself against an offensive player that jumps into him on every dribble drive (see: the first seven years of the career of one Ming, Yao). The problem with the charge in the NBA is that the refs will not call it unless you fall. So Battier and Hayes do the best they can--they square up, they claim their vertical space on the floor, they show that they are not in motion upon contact, and then they wait for the offensive guy to jump into them. I have never seen Battier or Hayes fly themselves backwards like they were Kirilenko or got hit with shotgun pellets or anything; if the defender doesn't run into them they'll just hold their ground without falling. The worst that they end up doing is that they might try to draw the charge while they are still sliding their feet, at which point yes that should be a no-call and fairly often is called as such.

I really get ticked off though when people call Battier and Hayes "floppers". That indignifying term should be saved for those who deliberately while on offense or defense crumble to the ground or propel themselves five feet through the air when in fact they were barely touched or, worst yet, they initiated the contact themselves.

Oh and I forgot about all soccer players :p .

He seems a little crazed there. I was worried he might get kicked out by the refs.

Has that ever happened with a broadcaster?

It doesn't help that scola has grease all over his shoes, other wise I would agree with him. But you can't be that big of a homer.

The officiating has been progressively getting worse in the NBA and I am with Bullard on this one.

The Rockets flopped just as often, though.

    Bullard was like:

[portland flops] FLOP!! That's TERRIBLE. The officials are TERRIBLE!!

[houston flops] Well, see that's a flop too. See, I wish that wouldn't be called a foul.

[portland flops] AGAIN FLOP!! That's a DISCRACE to basketbal! HORRIBLE!

[houston flops] Good defense, I guess. But, see, I just don't like that flopping.

Exactly. I've never seen an announcer do that. It makes you feel good inside knowing that he's fighting as much as he can for a Rockets win. He loves the team.

I remember Battier's charge against Roy and was like. Battier's a smart man, he probably just thought "when in rome, "

The Trailblazers announcers made me take Bull, Bill, and Clyde for granted.

WTF. The Trailblazers seriously wanted free throws for an offensive foul!

Matt is telling the truth. Players on both sides were flopping... Bayless, Miller for Portland... Scola, Lowry for Houston, etc. It seems like for a 5 min stretch in the 4th quarter, a whistle was blown on every possession. It turned a good basketball game into a flopping contest.

Does Matt Bullard realize that the Rockets currently lead the league in offensive fouls drawn per game (here)? Or that Kyle Lowry current leads the league in drawn offensive fouls and Scola is tied for 10th, (here), and pretty much every one of them is a flop?

I think he needs to give it a rest, because the Rockets rely on the flop as much as any team in the league. He either comes off sounding like a hypocrite, or it makes us look bad.

Outside the complaining about the refs and some of the corny jokes, he's doing a good job. He does a great job breaking down plays.

I dunno if I can equate a charge to a flop. The rule for charges say you have to go to the ground or it wont be called. Flops are what Bayless did when running baseline because he was frustrated that Lowry was playing a little defense on him. Flops are what Przybilla does when he falls down trying to defend a post player because he cant actually defend. Scola has done this somewhat, but for the most part he doesnt get that call.

Amen. Those guys don't know what they're talking about. When a team has 5 team fouls and commit a charge, that's not free throws for the other team. Shouldn't they know that by now?

Also, when Lowry fouled some Portland player out of bounds while the play was going on, they said that should have been free throws. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I thought that foul would only mean free throws if someone was passing from out of bounds into the court, not when the foul is commited out of bounds.
