DD, I've gotta agree with you here.

You know he could be had on the cheap and busts his ass; however, that would not change the fact that we are going to be sitting with Ariza/Budinger without Battier as it is.

Besides, I like having an Artest/Barnes personality on the court with Yao- Brings out the intensity I want to see the big fella play with.

There are knuckleheads I'm willing to take, but there are some I shy away from.

I'm more than likely going to shy away from barnes.

On the court people call him a punk but the question is how is he in the locker room? I have not heard any reports of him being an cancer in the locker room.

That doesn't mean he's a bad guy in the lockerroom. Again I have not seen any reports that has said he's caused problems in the lockerroom so until then I will give him benefit of the doubt.

There have been other guys who have played with a whole bunch of teams in their career but not known as bad guys in the lockerroom.

Well there you go so I guess he's not as bad as people think. I think his teammates loved him in Golden St. too.

we already have Trevor Ariza(24) & Chase Budinger(22) at the SF position.....

why would we need Matt "Douchebag" Barnes ?

DD is right...if the price is right, Barnes could be a good addition. From a resource allocation standpoint, the Rockets have way way too much capital invested in Battriza. If trading Battier gets you solid value benefitting another part of the team (cough cough...frountcourt...Bosh), then replacing Battier with a $2 million a year Barnes makes sense.

Also, I'd agree that the team could actually use a little of his punk attitude at times.

He had a $1.6 million player option he's opting out of. Not sure it's the wisest decision. I think teams, and I'm pretty sure Morey and the Rockets, will be reluctant to take on many new contracts short of the definitives you take that player - meaning the max guys, or for the Rockets, Scola and Lowry. Owners will likely be reluctant to sign guys long-term with the CBA's future unknown. This was noted a the key reason the team hasn't already worked to get someone like Brooks extended, for example.

Moreover, I don't think Barnes is worth more than $1.6 million a year. I guess he's looking at the same situation from the player perspective and saying at a minimum, maybe I can get that $1.6 million, plus raises, in a longer-term deal, whereas if I wait till next offseason, the new CBA may have players of my caliber starting at a lower rate. He's probably right...but alternatively may only get that lower rate this year if he's left hanging as a FA till the end of the offseason.

I think Barnes opting out is a good move, teams were hesitant last year to sign him, heck for the last few because they were clearing cap room for this big offseason.

Now, some teams will be scrambling to fill holes as the big names settle and Matt Barnes will be in the 3rd tier of people that get signed......

So, he might get a multi year deal with a nice raise from someone that is looking to save a little face or fill out a roster with what is left of their cap room.

if Morey is still after Gortat, i see him trading Battier or Ariza to the Magic.

Hmmm, why would they do that, when they can get Barnes cheaper?

Unless they try to slap us with Vince Carter....YUCK !

Morey said he placed a specific value on Gortat and wouldn't go over it so I doubt it.

Barnes is like a Sasha Vujacic type nuisance that gets under the player's skin which helps him be a legit defender. Plus has long arms and quick. I would take him for the right price.

Just thought it was ironic that this thread was started. I was talking with some people last night about how Barnes is a punk. He's not good enough to take up a roster spot from anyone we have, IMO.
