    square + circle = 3
    square - circle = 1

    2+1 = 3
    2-1 = 2 circle's value is 2, square 1

    triangle + square = 6
    triangle - square = 4

    5+1 = 6
    5-1 = 4 triangle's value is 5, square 1

    triangle - circle = ?
    5-2 = 3

    :confused: maybe I'm over complicating it lol

    Maybe I am oversimplifying it, but wouldn't it work if you have...

    squares= 3
    triangles= 3
    circles= 0

    ?????

    thanks for posting this. this is cool. i think now i have a better appreciation for the chinese written language. symbols start really early.

    Damn, this seems recursive to me...and it is blowing my mind at the moment. so thinking what a first grader with knowledge of symbols could figure out...I'm going with

    0...zero

    crap, i'm having a big problem with the 6 square eating my triangle.

    screw this...It would be a lot simpler for me to post the secret pictures of the RPD who had her uniform malfunction on court...that got band by Clutch.

    Reading everyone's posts...

    I now think no one is right. It is 2.

    I still don't know if we are adding or subtracting stuff,,,because it is so damn recursive.

    I'm going with 2 because the difference of the first line and second line are both 2. And i could explain how the last line becomes 2 as well. But it would make me forget about recursion, which I'm not really ready to do right now.

    So, on faith, as a 1st grader, I'm going with 2.

    Upon even further google review (tomorrow is my Veteran's Day off, and all) I now think it is a chinese psychology experiment...testing how long a Westerner will try to solve a chinese proverb/math problem that is meaningless.

    Both bottom left - up left and bottom right - upright = triangle/circle = 3.

    I believe this is the correct answer, but I am pretty sure this is not a math problem for Chinese first graders.

    My guess: 5

    Reasoning:
    If the square is on the inside of the figure, it has no value. If it is on the outside, it has the value of 2.

    The value of the circle (by itself, the square has no bearing because it is inside) is 1. The value of the triangle (by itself, the square has no bearing because it is inside) is 4.

    So...the square with the circle inside is equal to 3 (given).
    The square with the triangle inside is equal to 6 (given)

    The value of the triangle (4) with the circle inside (1) is equal to 5. The square is the only shape that loses its value when inside another figure. The circle, while inside the triangle, does not lose its value.

    Probably not correct...but it was MY logical conclusion.

    Edit: It seems to me that this is probably just a simple sequence problem. "What comes next in the sequence..."

    Each side is increasing by increments of 3 with a different of 2 between them

    3 to 1
    6 to 4
    9 to 7

    Edit: No matter what, this math question is much more interesting than the last one posted here that (should have) embarrassed a lot of BBSers.

    It would have been easier for me to figure out if the drawings were a little be more clear in regards to what was touching and what wasn't.
