I'd really have to see proof of this before I believe this is meant for first graders, of any country. This looks like spam email I use to get, one of which states I'm as smart as Einstein if I solved it. I did it in 10 minutes.
I guessed 9 only because I couldn't figure out a pattern, lol. All I saw was 3 and 6 going down. and on the right it's just -2 each number. So in that way it's 9. It's probably wrong though. I doubt 1st graders could get this if they were just given a problem like this with no instruction.
I doubt first graders actually got this. It was probably from one of those email chains that are based on zero actual facts.

Its possible. I once had this chinese substitute back in elementary school show us some sort of entrance exam thing. It wasnt shapes and numbers like this though but still kinda tough as no one got it. I cant remember perfectly what it looked like but it was a big rectangle, in the middle of the rectangle were 2 parallel-vertical lines not intersecting the top or bottom of the rectangle. There was some other things in the rectangle and the purpose was to connecect everything without intersecting any line or re-tracing. Not one got it until the sub showed us.
I agree Spoiler It's all in the arraignment of the actual shapes the way they are placed is determined if you add or subtract. Or you can add whatever that is just the way I solved it. 1= square 2 = circle 5= Triangle 1 + 2 = 3 2 -1 =1 1 + 5 = 6 5 -1 = 4 5 -2 = 3
Exactly what I got Edit: It can be 7 depending on how it was drawn. I don't think the OP has the exact shape sizes as the original problem since he redrew them himself.
I disagree Spoiler With all due respect, it looks like he took great care in making sure the objects touched or not, especially the last (square in the triangle). The circles look like they could have easily touched if he weren't careful drawing it.
Rectangle = 1 Circle = 2 Triangle = 5 If smaller number on the outside, addition. If bigger number on the outside, subtraction. Therefore, Triangle - Circle = 5 - 2 = 3
What kind of math problem is this? I doubt this is what they're teaching them over there. I'm guessing this is some sort of IQ test, that first graders happen to take. Whats the answer? And do you even solve something like this without more information? Guessing its 3.
Ahh you posted it before, thats what I was thinking. Subtracting based on whats on the inside and going from there.
Row 1 has common shape in circle so 3 + 1 = 4. Divide 4 by 2 (since there are two shapes) and you get 2. Row 2 has common shape in triangle so 6 + 4 = 10. Divide 10 by 2 (since there are two shapes) and you get 5 Row three has circle and triangle. So 2 + 5 = 7. Answer is 7! Right?
