I do agree with this but I remember a lot of people in support of Obama 4 years ago specifically stated that he was just saying that because he had to in order to get elected at the time, which is something ALL politicians do.

I find it pretty substantial that in just 4 years the president or anybody else can vocally support the issue without being totally demonized.....well for the most part.

That statement reminds me of our Prime Minister...

...gets elected introduces Carbon Tax and calls it a 'Carbon Levy'.

She is the worst Prime Minister in our history and a straight faced liar.

We call them the Labour Party, basically the same ideology as your democrats.

Do those of you who support gay marriage also endorse polygamy?

It's not a valid comparison, nor is their a large movement to legalize it, but I'd be fine if Polygamy were legal.

Again, ALL politicians do this. It is not limited to one party or the other.

Yes, all politicians change positions at some point. They also all lie at some point.

However, I think the Obama situation with same-sex marriage was pretty unique in that he pretty much told us from the beginning that he was going to change his stance when it became either politically feasible/convenient. I don't know of any other politician ever saying I'm against something now, but my position is "evolving."

There are a small segment of polyamorous people in the US, but I think historically, Polygamy has been linked to child abuse and other crimes that actually do harm others. Do I care if people want to have the freedom to consent to marry multiple people? Not really.

But this whole x-will-lead-to-y argument is kind've silly anyway, isn't it?

This whole anti-gay marriage stance people hold is almost entirely due to religious views that they'd like to see codified into law. The slippery slope on that one leads to things much worse (and also maybe including) polygamy.

And if government can tell you who you can't marry, doesn't the slippery slope lead to the government telling you who you must marry?

So can we leave these straw man "gay marriage leads to polygamy" arguments out of this?

Only if they legalize prostitution. I don't want a bunch of dudes with lots of pent-up sexual frustration. That's how most wars are started.

Thinking about it for second. If I were a powerful person and polygamy were legal, I would start a war so all the dudes would die off, and I would take all the women. I'm sure that's how the people in charge thought in the old days, which is why somebody thought it would be a good idea to outlaw it.
