Dudes... I wasn't expecting this. Totally slapped me in the face. 1st Marvel in house movie correct? If this is what they have in store then keep them coming. This was freaking perfect.

$104,250,000 domestic, $201,000,000 total worldwide. Also, the best reviewed movie of 08 so far according to Rotten Tomatoes. Well done Jon Favreau, you are so money and you do know it.

pretty damn good, never followed the comic, I was expecting a summer movie flick, and got a whole lot more

so, is the Avengers flick a go? if so, thats pretty badass if true, I guess they are trying to rival "World's Finest" even if thats ever going to come out

Great movie but there was still some parts when you go, "well how does that happen?" and parts where he never gets hurt after some mishaps. Oh well u can't have it 100% real in hollywood but VERY entertaining none the less.

I am wondering that myself. What comes first? Iron Man 2 or Avengers? Captain America or Iron Man 2? etc... I like where Iron Man is headed. Avengers may be too big a mountain to climb so soon

The idea was, if they hit $70, sequel for 2010 would be greenlit (production opening this fall). RD Jr and Jon Fav both were talking trilogy for the franchise.

Avengers slated for 2011 (but these things NEVER worth betting on)
Marvel Studio solo flicks anticipated before then:
Hulk this summer (may or may not be Avenger)
Cap America 2009 (I just have the worst time seeing this translate)
    Thor 2009
    Ant Man 2009 (really?!)
    Nick Fury (2009)
Maybe before, maybe same year, maybe later than Avengers:
    Hawkeye
Dr Strange (may or not be an Avenger)
Black Panther (sure you don't want to just call him Panther, Marvel?)

Favreau on record saying that Marvel intends to do Avengers with all the real actors, or not at all. Others have been expecting it to be pure CGI.

are all those movies really in production? i think releasing a slew of solo movies to prep for an ensemble movie is a horrible idea. i know i won't care about half those characters and sheer overexposure to superheroes will make me not care about the rest. if they want to do an Avengers movie they should go ahead and make one. the timing they appear to be aiming for requires too much too soon in order to set the table for an Avengers flick. the same reason x-men wouldn't be able to cover all the great stories we want; the actors can't play those roles for 30 years, and that's how long it would take to really gear up for the storylines we see in the comic book.

That's pretty awesome. I don't see why they couldn't have all of the original actors from these movies in an Avengers movie. They have to have Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. The rest of the members are up in the air...Hulk was an original member but it's hard to see him on a 'team', at least the angry, 'hulk smash' version. It would be cool to see Quicksilver in there, too, just to add a tie to the X-Men side of things.

I would also have no problem with Favreau becoming the man for Marvel films from here on out.

I think they should cut most of those movies.

I could see Nick Fury being pretty interesting depending on the cast and story, and Thor might be good, but only if they tell it from the Norse God perspective. A Thor story set in our world would be pretty bleh imo. But a battle set in Asgard facing Frost Giants and stuff or loki would be pretty interesting. I'd go real dark and medieval with the stuff though instead of modern superhero type films.

An Avengers film would be cool, but I just don't see how they will make it worth watching, unless they battle the Hulk. I don't read the Ultimate comics, but didn't they fight the HUlk in those?

Cap America will be hard to translate imo, but I'd see it.

By the way, Iron Man rocked hard. I know things happened that weren't humanely possible, but come on, it's a movie about a comic book superhero. LOL

I thought they actually did a great job making it seem pretty feasible.

Well, this is based off of the Ultimates comics at least in part. I just read the roster of the Ultimates version of the Avengers, and it features Iron Man, Cap, Wasp, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thor, and someone named Valkryie.

And they did battle Hulk in a comic. That could be a potential storyline.

My comic lore is pretty fuzzy, but I think that after they battled the Hulk (the reason why they formed), the Avengers fought the Sub-Mariner.

There's no need for a Hawkeye, Dr. Strange, etc movie, I agree with that sentiment. You don't need to give every guy in the Avengers their own movie. Ant-Man is being done by Edgar Wright though, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so I don't expect that to be a straight up super hero movie and can live with it.

Captain America has the most potential IMHO. The whole story is epic. Super soldier created to fight the Nazi's, lost for decades, has to adapt to a modern world (this might be dangerous ground to tread, but what about using Captain America to sway support for an unpopular war as one plot point in the movie?)

In WWII, they could use the Ultimate Captain America's uniform:

I was somewhat surprised that they did not play more of the drinking playboy swinger that Tony Starks was. I know they did but I guess I was expecting a larger play on that angle.

Just curious, someone mentioned earlier that they were disappointed in that his computer sidekick (Jarvis??) was a computer. How was Jarvis portrayed in the comics?

What did everyone think of Gwyneth Paltrow in that blue dress at the Firemans Fundraiser? :D

I'd like them to do at least part of the Cap movie as a historical piece. End it with him being frozen and what not, and maybe the final scene being what sets up the Avengers movie.

I just think he translates much better to that story, similarly to how I think Thor will translate better on the big screen as an Asgardian story.

Saw this movie this weekend, and all I can say is WOW.

I think this is probably the very best movie effort in putting a comic book on screen, really letting these characters shine - maybe even better than Spiderman 1 & 2 (mostly because I cannot stand to look at kirsten dunst - yuk-o!). Only other movie from a comic book which was made by people so clearly dedicated to the material that I can think of was The Crow. Maybe Blade too, never really heard how that compared to the comics.

Anyway, Iron Man was absolutely brilliant.

However, I *do* have a couple of niggling little nits to pick.

spoilers used for those who have not seen it yet, don't click

#1, I wanted more, a LOT more, of his wreaking vengeance/havoc on the terrorists when he came back in his hot-rod suit to destroy the weapons. It was too cool and gut-wrenching at the same time. (by the way, what the heck is up with the white-boy terrorists?? anyone else notice that?)

#2, I don't understand why the 'exploding reactor trick' killed Stane but didn't touch Stark. What did I miss?

They specifically played it down, primarily because they knew that a LOT of little kids were going to be eating this movie like candy. Didn't really miss it, personally. They can play it up more in the sequel, that would be a better spot for it - that sort of thing is better in an Act II of a 3-Act trilogy.

As for your last question, she looked delicious. She definitely needs to start getting nekked in movies while she still has a few good years left.

I don't know. I think these movies are based off the Ultimate version of the Marvel Universe though, not mainstream.
