Obviously the White Sox wouldn't have even won a game yet this season without Maldy's leadership and pitcher prep
AVG.057 HR 0 RBI 0 OPS .194 https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/30289 He may be even worse than Abreu offensively Is that even possible?
Chances this has a chance of succeeding? https://www.southsidesox.com/2024/6...onado-for-the-all-star-game-chicago-white-sox That being said, a small-but-loud contingent of fans have decided that the worst team should be represented by their worst player, so come on down, Martín Maldonado! This season Maldy is batting .074 and is worth -1.5 bWAR. Pretty much every time I see him starting over Korey Lee I want to bleach my eyes, which describes most of the experiences watching this tire fire, but I digress. He is not a good catcher and somehow his bat is even worse. Edgar Quero could come up today and be at least twice as useful despite not playing above Double-A this year.
The sad thing is he isn’t their worst player - not even close. At least he brings something besides his bat… I’d find a use for Maldonado if I were a team, he can be a great back up catcher…. Andrew Benetendi brings nothing.
I don’t get it. He was a really bad hitter by the end of his tenure, but we won a lot - he loved the Astros and was a big part of the dynasty. Was it time to move on? Yeah I think so, but Maldy was fine overall.
Maldy crowding the plate like a little leader against Wheeler in Game 6 was huge. The man’s ability diminished but he was and is a baseball savant. Imagine us not having the 2022 title. Maybe we win it without that move in Game 6. But maybe we don’t because wheeler keeps mowing us down. Maldy frustrated the hell out of me, but I’d buy him a beer.
At this point, those obsessed with continuing to bump these should be called out as much as they seem to want to continue to call him out… He clearly should move on to managing or pitch coaching or whatever the next phase will be.
