Also, since when did Adelman's style require a passing pg? Answer is never. Brooks is in the build of Mike Bibby, not sure why anyone would be unhappy with that.

Basketball IQ is the most overused, worthless cliche in basketball, maybe sports

Wrong, his BBall IQ and court vision have improved drastically, but people refuse to notice this backdoor passes, the wrap around passes on the drives, the PnR passes to Scola and Yao.....

Folks get locked into thinking one thing and forget to notice the improvement.

Is he perfect, of course not, is he good enough?

READ WHAT MOREY SAID IN MY SIG !

Exactly, he is doing 100% of what the coach is asking him to do, playing his role, and making some outstanding basketball decisions, be it to pass or shoot.

I don't know why people on this board fail to recognize that he is our most important player, without AB starting we are a .500 team with or without Yao.

With AB we are a 50+ win team.

AB is the only guy that can create his own shot as well as others off the bounce on the entire team.....he makes the Rocket's go.

More intelligence in this thread, it is making me realize that not everyone is a dunderheaded nincompoop around here.

    ;)

    (and yes, I jest)

People forget that this team was plagued for years by having no one on the court besides tmac that could create a shot for themselves. This resulted in the Rockets never scoring enough points or scoring efficiently enough to win important games. Now they can score with the best of em and people want to go back to what has been proven to not work for this team.

Agreed, for years we haven't had a legit point guard who was a scoring threat, everyone complained about Alston being a terrible shooter...good defender, but terrible shooter, now we have that in AB and now he needs to be a pass first PG? I do wish he would be more of an assist man and be better on defense, but we having that in Lowry (defense) and Smith (passing PG). They all compliment each other IMO, and will thrive in Adleman's system IMO

Most people are too shortsighted to remember how terrible it was to have Rafer, a pass first PG, alongside Yao.

    They just don't understand synergy.

is Feigen officially on Les' payroll?

Martin seems like a nice team mate in that piece ... just don't "actively" try to trade him or mess with his preseason minutes.

Rafer wasn't terrible b/c he was a pass-first PG (which is what you're implying). He was terrible b/c he was a wildly inconsistent shooter.

    And apparently, neither do you.

Rafer could neither shoot from distance nor finish effectively. We now have one point guard who is terrific from distance (Brooks) and one point guard who is a great finisher (Lowry). The balance of their play is Lowry is by far the superior defender. In fact, Lowry is one of the best point guard defenders and most disruptive overall defenders in the NBA. Lowry's defense flat out ignites our fast break which is usually led by him busting a... up the court with the ball and forcing his mates to bust their a... to keep up, which creates LAYUPS and SHOOTING FOULS at the rim, very high percentage efficient offense.

My point is the reason why we need Brooks is because we need two players out of three on the perimeter that can get their shot and create their shot from the outside. With Battier starting, those two perimeter scorers are KMart and Brooks. IF......we had a scoring SF that could shoot 40% from 3, and could create some offense off the dribble, and could run and finish off the break, then all of a sudden the point guard that makes the most sense is the point guard that plays havoc defensively, gets the break going, and either finds the shooters, or finishes the break with the layup and foul. Brooks is necessary by default, the default being Battier is not a scorer.

Definitely overstating his faults. He is not as bad a passer as you suggest. He is not as bad a defender as you suggest. He is nowhere near as reckless as Lowry. He is the starter chosen by Adelman for a reason. No one passes the ball into Yao well. It is difficult because Yao is so slow and people continually do everything possible to stop the ball from getting into Yao. Everybody has the playbook on how to defend Yao. ANd number one in that book is not to allow him to get the ball down low. Never allow Yao to get the ball down low. Have the defender constantly moving ready to jump out in front to block the pass... Have another player cheat over to steal the pass, have his defender front Yao to deny him the ball. It is the number one strategy of almost every team when defending Yao. No one in all of Yao's years has been able to get the ball to Yao consistently.

You are underrating Brook' value to this team. He will never be confused for Steve nash but teams hate guarding him and he is a better defender than you suggest.

I know, that is the issue, folks are fans of his and are dying for him to start.

If Kyle could shoot, he might beat out Aaron, but so far Kyle, as good as he is, has been a career backup PG.

And until the guy learns to shoot the ball and not have his success defined by the men in stripes, he will always be a backup PG.

I like all 3 of our PGs, and eventually, I could see one of them traded, personally, I think Lowry will be traded as his contract is rather large for a backup, and if Ish Smith can provide nearly the same abilities, there would be no need to pay a backup PG $6 million a year.

Regarding Aaron, the team will pay him what he is worth, because starters like him with his high end skill set do NOT come around very often, he is a very unique player and we are lucky to have him....much harder to find the Aaron Brooks of the world than the Kyle Lowry's.

And Lowry IS NOT a good finisher at all, he barrells into the lane and begs for the call from the ref.....if he was a good finisher, he would shoot higher than 40%....

    Two things:

    1. AB is a great finisher as well. What makes him our go-to player is his ability to score from anywhere on the floor. He doesn't draw as many fouls as Kyle, but that doesn't mean he isn't a good finisher

    2. Shane has two roles on offense: Get the ball into Yao and hit the corner 3. He is good at both. Sure, he's not Ray Allen or Mike Miller, but it's good enough so that defenses have to respect it and space the floor, which is the most important thing. The occasional post-up or putback dunk is just gravy. I think Battier is overrated in the media, but underrated on this board.

Everything else I agree with you on.

I agree. Seems like many people are into shaking things up just because. We've seen from the past several years that it doesn't work that way.

But, I do have to say that in the little we've seen of Lowry this preseason, his jumper is looking pretty good. He's taken a couple of threes without hesitation, and each one swished like it was a wide open Bud 3.

I dont get why Brooks is labeled a bad finisher. He seems to finish around the rim very well.

One reason that was such a bad combo was because everyone knew we had a pass first PG, and everyone knew who he was planning to pass it to. The way it is now, nobody knows what AB will do ... pass, shoot, drive ... and therefore they cannot focus in on any one aspect of the PG play. We have a lot of different ways to burn teams this year ... if they try to take away one thing, we'll burn 'em with another. The big question for me is if the players are prepared enough to know how to change at will. They have to realize what the D is taking away, and look elsewhere ... Think Peyton Manning ....

Why am I not surprised that this thread turned into another Brooks vs. Lowry debate?

He seems to make tough shots. How many times has Bill or Bull asked how the heck he made that shot under there after a Brooks layup?? Lowry's are more straight forward(because he is a bit taller and bulkier) so they just look easier and therefore more repeatable.

NBA Hotspots isn't working right now but Lowry wasn't all that far ahead of Brooks in finishing around the rim. And Brooks was up there with most starting PGs in the league.
