My wife actually got me one of these as a "back up" wedding ring. She's pretty awesome. Make sure whatever you get is "comfort fit".
It doesn't matter for us. As others have said, it's not necessary to spend a lot. Just determine what the shape (round or flat) and width looks best on you. Mine is a cheap tungsten band that only cost a few hundred bucks. I chose tungsten since you can beat the hell out of it and it doesn't scratch. Avoid the white gold since its delicate and needs regular polishing. If you're looking for something a little nicer, go with the platinum.

Would you want to be surprised with your wedding ring? I didn't realize the wedding rings were supposed to match. We don't have matching ones, and I can't think of any of our friends that do. There is nothing wrong with him having input. Not sure why this is confusing to anyone.
cool story for ya bros: married in the 70's, I didn't really even want to wear a ring, but we got a jade band with gold trim. About a week after the honeymoon, I was working with a post hole digger and shattered the ring between the poles. Never replaced it, 37 years later, still haven't. Didn't make any difference.
I got just a white gold band with no extras. I think it was about $250. Not a fan of gawdy jewelry on men. Too greaseball. We know a jeweler in Kingwood and he cleans our rings for free, so we do that about once a year. Mine holds up pretty well considering it gets a drumstick rubbed against it for 4 hours every weekend. Our guy is able to buff out any scratches and make it look like new any time we want. And agree with whoever said comfort fit is a must. Feels like you're not even wearing a ring.
My wife got me a platinum ring. No diamonds. I think 5 or 6 MM so not too gaudy. Just wanted to mention to never play sports while wearing a tungsten ring...not sure about titanium. You can be screwed if you sprain your finger. It took my friend weeks to get it off when he jammed his ring finger playing ball.
Lots of advice about playing it cheap, I'll take it a step further, just use the ring money on a vasectomy.
Married man here checking in. It will be 21 years next Friday. Something to consider is the type of work you do and will you wear ring to work. I work in chemical plants and I use my hands a lot. I purchased a 10k plain yellow gold band because 14k is softer than 10k and tends to bend easier. I still wear original band and don't recall the last time I took it off. Think I paid $100 for it in 1991.
Biggest waste of money. Mine was about $300 and haven't worn it once . My wife's was about $600 and she lost hers a few years ago and we never bothered to replace it.
Tungsten ring imo is the way to go. I have one and it never does scratch which I like. I work out on a pretty regular basis and use free weights a fair amount and they have never scratched the ring. Also, a nurse friend of mine tells me that it's no problem if you go into the hospital with a tungsten ring because they have a pretty efficient way of getting it off of your finger. (No...not cutting your finger off!) She told me at one point, but I forgot how they did it.
LOL! Oh, you're being serious... heypartner, are you married? I didn't know. Just match hers. Why would you wear anything different? Won't you both be married? Mrs. SwoLy's and mine are completely the same, just a 14kt gold band. Why the need for something so sophisticated with designs and such? It's a symbol, not an accessory.
