After reading all the replies, seriously, is there a chance that Bush not winning Texas this year? I sincerely welcome Texans' thoughts.
Young friend, you have yet to learn that the political opinions reflected on this board more closely approximate a random sampling of Grateful Dead listeners than true Texans.
The real issue here is that Bush/Rove obviously don't feel they can win without the Christian (and I use that term loosely) right frothing at the mouth and ready to do battle. I'm disgusted by the political calculus and the disrespect showed to both the Constitution and to all people who love each other, but I'm also amused by the fact they felt it was necessary.
As someone who has roots going back several generations in Texas, unlike a certain puff of hot air who pretends to be, well, the resident conservative comedian (I say pretend, because he usually isn't good for more than a chuckle), it pains me to say that Texas will go for Bush this time. It would take something monumental, ala Watergate, prior to November to swing it into the Democratic column. Even then, it would be tough. Someday, that will change. All things do, sooner or later.
rimrocker, this move is not purely political in nature. Bush has very few options to stop the grotesque surge in gay marriages of late, all supported by activist judges, not lawmakers or the people. The extemists have held this issue hostage -- now Bush will try to rescue it.
Are you an ethnic comedian? I had no idea. Believe it or not, Trader_J, I've known Latinos over the years whose ancestors fought in the Texas Revolution... as did one of mine. I have no idea what ethnicity you are. Am I supposed to? I often refer to myself as a replicant... aka android. You may take my self-description seriously or not. I really could care less. You should be flattered that I occasionally get a chuckle from your antics. I have a broad sense of humor. Many here do not.
The Compassionate Conservative on Larry King in 2000... ______________________ BUSH: It doesn't matter. Let's talk about that issue. Each person needs to be judged with their heart and soul. I don't ask the question what somebody's sexual orientation is. I don't ask the question. KING: So if you have gays working for you, that's fine. And you don't have a problem. You'd appoint gays in the Cabinet, et cetera. BUSH: Well, I'm not going to ask what their sexual orientation is. KING: Oh, so you wouldn't know. BUSH: I'm going to appoint conservative people in the Cabinet. It's none of my business what somebody's -- now when somebody makes it my business, like on gay marriage, I'm going to stand up and say I don't support gay marriage. I support marriage between men and women. KING: So if a state were voting on gay marriage, you would suggest to that state not to approve it? BUSH: The state can do what they want to do. Don't try to trap me in this state's issue like you're trying to get me into. KING: You just did. You have an opinion.
The Bush junta knows it can't win on the issues. The economy sucks, still. Bush has proven himself to be a passionate enemy of the middle class. He's the worst President in history with respect to the environment. Little by little people are waking up to what a tragic, incredibly expensive and devastatingly poorly planned fraud this 'war' in Iraq is. He has no choice but to polarize the country with incredible nonsense like a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and motivate his appallingly ignorant and bigoted base. Everyone with an ounce of intelligence knows that this constitutional amendment ploy is a joke. It won't go anywhere legislatively. Eventually that pesky equal protection under the law bit will surface and send these bigots back to the NASCAR races, their flat-bottomed boats, Wal-Mart or wherever the hell they come from. But you can bet that Coach Bush will get whatever mileage he can from it, hoping to capitalize on the fact that the Democrats are dumb enough to run a rich Washington insider against him. Meanwhile bigots like Trader_Jorge_Wallace will continue to demonstrate their contempt for liberty, their contempt for the principle that all citizens are entitled to the same rights. TJW hates freedom.
Can someone please tell me why the majority of Americans OPPOSE gay marriage? Are you liberal nut-jobs going to call half of America bigots? How about just all Christians? Isn't the minority vocal? Poor things.
Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported slavery. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported women not having the right to vote. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported African-Americans not being able to eat at the same restaurant as whites. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported African-Americans not being able to attend the same schools as whites. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported African-Americans not being able to sleep at the same hotel as whites. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported African-Americans not being able to drink from the same water fountain as whites. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported African-Americans not being able to play in the same sports leagues as whites. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported bans on interracial marriage. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported poll taxes. Once upon a time, the majority of Americans supported Al Gore. Are you saying all these things that the majority of Americans supported were beneficial to the nation? Hate will always be on the wrong side of history. I'm happy to say that I support gay people and their right to marry, adopt, and live normal lives without government interference. 20 years from now, you'll be embarassed that you don't.
Does the majority favor a constitutional amendment to ban it? How about you? Do you oppose gay marriage or not? And if so why or why not? Take a stand TJ. Contribute for once. you have a right to be heard.
Of course, none of those things have anything to do with the issue at hand, nice try though. How do Christians, in good faith, support an issue like gay marriage? Seems like the Bible is pretty clear on the issue.
What does the Bible have to do with our Constitution? If Christians, which I am one, want their nation to follow the exact rules of the Bible, either find another country, or quit calling this one the America our Founding Fathers created. They're spinning in their graves at this crap.
How do you feel about them adopting? Having sex? Having civil unions? Being able to freely browse the available males at Match.com? What about the big, bad government taking a role in saying who people can and cannot marry? Stay far, far away from my money, but let's legislate morality!!! Not a very Republican idea.
I don't know why John Forbes Kerry opposes gay marriage. I'd love to hear his answer on the topic. Sam, do you support gay marriage?
Why do you oppose gay marriage? I fully support gay marriage. I fully support any church that decides to bless gay marriages and I fully support any church that decides not to grant them. Our government shouldn't make that decision, IMO. And even if they did, they certainly shouldn't add a freaking amendment to the Consititution saying they can't marry.
