When the President of the United States proposes a constitutional amendment, aren't Americans supposed to take it as a serious event and a topic for serious discussion? Are you saying that everyone should just understand that it is an election year stunt and don't worry about it? If that's the case, what does it say about Bush? And what would it say about his supporters?
this is all moot since it requires 2/3rds majority of each house of Congress to pass a proposed amendment before it goes to the states (which then requires 2/3rd majority of the states to ratify it)
It's not about actually getting the amendment. It's about reaching out to the anti-gay majority in the country and saying, "I'm your guy." It's less and less acceptable to do that with, say, black people, but gays are still fair game.
Exactly, I doubt there's any possible way this gets ratified. Thankfully. Off topic, I don't think there's any way I can vote for Bush in November. Constitutionally mandated discrimination just about does it for me. I just wish we didn't have to choose between 2 ridiculously ****ty candidates.
whoaaaa, slow down there a bit, all i asked was does any think it's realistic to expect the amendment will get out of congress. who said anything about not discussing it? if you'll note, i'm on record in this thread as disagreeing with the amendment.
And yet you're full-bore, damn the torpedoes supporting this guy, who would propose this amendment knowing it has no chance, in an election year, to appeal to his "base". Doesn't it make you the least bit uncomfortable? What do you think it says about Republicans who aren't part of this "base" and yet go to great lengths to defend him? This is an amendment to the Constitution. It isn't whether or not he likes ketchup with his "Freedom Fries".
Nope, just all bigots. I'm sure there are anti-gay bigots in all religions, but religion is no excuse for bigotry. You seem really worked up about this issue, Jorge. Were you planning to move to Massachusetts? Even if the amendment takes, you can still go to Canada.
I would call the folks in favor of this bill bigots whether they are Christian or not. As one may consider separately the set of supporters of this bill, the set of Christians, and the set of bigots, the set of supporters lies almost entirely as a subset of bigots. There would be an overlap of the Christian set with the bigot set. It would not be a subset of one or the other way around. You chose a pretty poor path for arguing.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit. Look how lopsided the vote was for the DOMA in 1996, in both houses. And there are already enough states who passed their own DOMAs to ratify the amendment. *** Hey, who left all this garbage on the steps of Congress? I'm not garbage I'm an amendment to be, I said an amendment to be And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me There's a lot of gays & lesbians who want too much freedom I want to make it legal for policemen to beat them Cuz there's limits to our liberties At least I hope and pray that there are Cuz those liberal freaks go too far But why can't we just make a law against being gay? Because that law would be unconstitutional. But if we change the constitution ... ... then we could make all sorts of crazy laws! Now you're catching on What if people say you are not good enough to be in the constitution? Then I'll crush all opposition to me And I'll make Ted Kennedy pay If he fights back, I'll say that he's gay Good news amendment! They ratified you! You're in the US Constitution Oh yeah! Doors open boys!
i full-bore support his policies in iraq, the war on terror, and mostaspects of his economic agenda, for me, the former far outweighs any shortcomings he might have on other issues. when the democrats come up with a serious policy that doesn't outsource american security to the UN and France, perhaps i'll take another look at their candidates. The presidents position on this is regretable. JFK's position on the war on terror is absurd.
I think there should be a constitutional amendment banning bigots from marrying anyone, in case it's in their genes. Who's next?
One of the more fascinating side stories is that former gay activist, Mary Cheney, gets 100,000 a year after taxes to help run her father's re election campaign.
Well, at least for one night it's worked. CNN quote: "The president has made this the number one issue for this year's campaign." The Economy Iraq Education All have taken a back seat to forcing morality
... Terrorism Environment Foreign Relations Budget Deficit Energy Trade Deficit Afghanistan Jobs (yeah, under 'Economy', but deserves it's own mention) and of course... A trip to Mars. I think he's already there.
