Well he does have a point...Carlisle is amazing, I think he's the 2nd best active coach after Pops. However the Mavs' time is done. Dirk's loyalty is commendable but unless they get LBJ (Melo certainly won't cut it) they will never be relevant again.
I'd put Thibodeau 3rd. Carlisle has been a great coach on both ends of the court. Thibodeau is a genius on the defensive end, but his minutes management and offensive coaching isn't nearly as Elite.
Rick Carlisle is an elite coach. However, it makes him look desperate ... "Hey my team isn't nearly as good, but but we have a great coach!"
Also true, but I focus far more on the actual offensive schemes and sets. IE, I ignore whether the ball goes into the basket or not and focus on how the team executes their ball movement, player movement, plays from time outs, and transition from set to set within the same possession. For example, in just one season and without having a ton of offensive weapons, Atlanta's offensive schemes are already far more sophisticated than anything the Bulls ever put on the floor. For example, the Hawks are in the first year of implementing the Spurs offense under Budenholzer (long time assistant under Pops). They don't have nearly the experience with the sets, or the offensive weapons of the Spurs, but you can already see the potential once they learn the scheme better and have more players who fit the system better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXy40z49jU4 Now the Mavs offensive schemes aren't nearly as sophisticated as the Spurs, but they do aggressively use multiple screens and pin downs to break players open and create seams for drives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkqY_t1AHlA This on the other hand is a nice breakdown of the Bulls offense... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfEpkPmJsl4 Notice the lack of aggressive cuts, the lack of player movement around the perimeter to create passing angles, the poor use of screens, how often players just "stand around" too close to each other for long parts of the possession, the lack of 2nd and 3rd options off the individual actions, and the lack of fluidity once the first action breaks down. The Bulls does have a lack of great offensive weapons, but those weapons would perform a LOT better if there was more options off individual actions, more aggressive screens to create openings, and if there wasn't so many attempts to "force" shots or passes when their offensive actions are compromised. Anyway, just some stuff to think about.
Cuban was not saying that McHale is a bad coach, he was saying that Rick Carlisle is a superior coach... to all the rest. Cuban thinks Carlisle is the best coach in the league. He thinks the Mavs have an advantage when recruiting free agents because Carlisle is the best. Simple as that. Did you even read the article. He as not even talking specifically about McHale or the Rockets, he was basically talking about all the teams with cap room (including the Bulls and Tom Thibodeau) and their coaches vs Carlisle.
Thank you. Carlisle is a great coach. He was great in .Detroit. He was great in Indy. And he's great in Dallas. Only problem is that the Mavs' roster is ancient and sucks, and that ain't gonna change anytime soon. Cuban left that part out.
