LOL. The risk is not worth more than six years. He will like have issues at 32-33. No team that wants to win long term is going year to year with a player. It only benefits the player.

Yep they did exactly what was done with Beltran. They waited around for him to make a decision and by the time he did all the key FA had signed elsewhere.

So the pitching needs can only be addressed through a trade this yr. The $ not paid to Correa this yr or in a longer deal (along with the $ coming off the books with Yuli + Brantley after this yr) can be used to extend Tuck + Yordan and pitching.

I was referring to the $300m+/10 Years he was throwing at the Astros last spring training. Correa had to know the Astros wouldn't go for that and as it turns out, no other club wanted any part of that either.

Now, as far as the 3 year deal goes, I would be surprised if the Astros didnt already do just as you outlined. No reason not to. Which brings me to think that Carlos didnt want the deal in Houston even if it was the same as what he took from Minny.

    Good point.

Makes me think the Astros were not planning on signing FA's in the first place, regardless of what Correa did.

A short term deal for the Astros with Correa is 4-6 years. Correa wanted 3 1- year contracts basically...so he can maximize his money. Astros said...no thanks.

The Astros have done one year deals. They’re doing one with Verlander.

with the supposed risk of Correa’s back or age eventually catching up to him, a short term deal made more sense than the original 5-6 year offer.

Big difference is Pena. Astros needed a multi year commitment from Correa so they could trade their biggest chip. The Correa or Pena question had to get resolved.

Not exactly. And Peña is not their biggest trade chip.

Given the health track record/age of Bregman and Altuve, there’s a good chance Peña was going to be getting big league AB’s sooner rather than later regardless of Correa.

Pena has all of 30 games above rookie ball in his career. Pretty sure the Astros don't need to resolve his future just yet. if they had Correa, Pena would likely still get plenty of at-bats with injuries/rest along the way for everyone else. That would let the Astros figure out what they actually have in him, which would give them more info on what to do when Correa opts out.

They aren't trading Lee or Leon, so yes, Pena would be their biggest trade chip IF and only if Correa resigned for multiple years. Pena needs to play or be traded. This is obviously why they didnt givie Correa opt outs for what amounts to a one year deal.

Pena has a grand total of 3 minor league games at 3B. They aren't slotting him there. And Pena hasn't played 2B in years. They aren't slotting him there either.

Pena is already 24. His time is now to either play or be traded. And Pena is a SS. He wasn't gonna get real time at 3B or 2B if Correa was here.

It's obvious the FO either wanted multiple years from Correa, or they were happy to roll with Pena at SS, with Leon in the wings, and with the payroll flexibility to address issues at the deadline.
