We can always move him to 3B after the first year, Bergman to 1B (Yuli walks), and Pena to SS. Also like how Seager is a LHH infielder. Feels like it’s been forever since we’ve had one.

Yeah his negative WAR in his last season has nothing to do with him sitting at home LOL he chose to do so because Correa was cheating...

    What a moron.

Seager is an average to above average SS defensively and that's the past couple years when he's been banged up...his first few seasons he was elite.

Ideally, by OD 2023 Yordan learns how to play a serviceable 1B and Altuve moves to LF/DH opening up 2B for Pena in the scenario we sign Seager or bring CC back. Altuve's defense has lost this team playoff games the past two seasons and his already limited range is going to get worse as he ages.

Can we please stop pretending 1B is a cakewalk to learn? It’s not, it is very demanding one ones knees. I don’t think Alvarez has the knees to play first. He’s had knee issues in the recent past. If he was able to play an adequate MLB 1B he’d have done so by now. Doubt his knees will get any better. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Never said it was a cake walk?

If knees couldn't handle it the team wouldn't have been working him out there daily...and that was in September they were doing that.

Edit: Also how is playing 1B worse on the knees than the OF where you have to sprint from a stand still and have the risk of collision?

Sorry wasn't able to just edit my prior response but FYI Dusty was about to put him there in an actual game in September...him playing 1B isn't some pipe dream.

I'm well aware of the many posters pushing this narrative two years ago and making it seem as if we could just run him out at first after a couple weeks taking grounders...that was a pipe dream. To your point 1B isn't easy to learn and that's why he's still working on it.

If Yordan to 1B we’re feasible then he would’ve been getting reps there long ago. It is not. It’s pretty telling that he’s never gotten reps there at any stage of his career. I just don’t think we can realistically hope for that to be in play. He is a DH who can spot start in LF on a non-regular basis.

He's been regularly "getting reps" on a daily basis during practice and Dusty literally confirmed he was ready to play him at 1B in a game in Sept. How does that equal "we can't realistically hope that to be in play"?

Edit: For those unable to read the Chronicle see below. Once again, please let me know the sources behind "he will never be able to play 1B"? My guess is that source is your opinion...

"Alvarez's typical pre-game routine involves taking groundballs at first base, but the level of the activity increased and he's nearing the point of playing there in a game. Houston manager Dusty Baker wanted to put him there in a game last week -- during last week's blowout 11-2 win over the Mariners -- but Alvarez felt he wasn't ready yet. "We feel he can do it, just in the future. He's been working there a lot," Baker said. First base is not foreign to Alvarez, who made 39 starts there in the minors."

You know what team has constantly played players out of position and gets bounced from the playoffs earlier than expected nearly every year? The Yankees.

Yordan is a DH. He should play LF 15ish games a year at home when Framber is on the mound if Brantley is still on the team.

We are so spoiled with the defense the Astros have had for so many years we forget how awful bad defense is to watch and will kill your chances to win.

Speaking of the Yankees, it’s an embarrassment to the game of baseball what they do defensively. Watching them try to play defense makes you really appreciate even average defense.

The White Sox were also butchers in the field. That was a significant advantage the Astros had in that series.

For years people were clamoring for a real DH with the productivity that warrants a spot for somebody who doesn’t play the field… sitting through Gattis, Marwin, Beltran, Tyler White, etc.

Now that they finally have one… one of the most prodigious hitters in all of baseball… one thats already had bilateral knee surgery before the age of 23… all people want to do is find a position for him.

Did not realize how good Javy Baez has been defensively in his career. Honestly thought he was average. Can anyone speak to whether the below per Baseball Savaant seems reasonable based on watching him play? I don't follow the NL much outside of the West anymore sadly.

He had a down year for his standards, but during the last three years (2019 to 2021) he still was in the top three in all of baseball in both defensive runs saved (DRS) and outs above average (OAA). Lindor and Ahmed were the two ahead of him in OAA. Correa was 6th behind Simmons and Crawford. Going back further from 2017 to 2021, he was fourth in OAA.

I know he strikes out a ton and has a low OBP, but if he's really near Carlos Correa with the glove, I don't understand why he isn't getting more hype than he is given he's only 28.

He's good for 30 bombs a year and would be perfect hitting in the 7 hole on this team with how much traffic on the bases there will be for him...theoretically teams would have to come into the zone more often and his low .OBP wouldn't really matter if we are hellbent on having Maldy in the lineup behind him.
