Mario Williams is the 9th Texans to earn player of the week honors. Williams also garnered honors as the Associated Press player of the week, and Sports Illustrated's Peter King recognized him as the defensive player of the week. Williams (6-7, 291), keyed the Texans defense, collecting five tackles-four solos, two sacks, three QB hurries, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and his career touchdown in the Texans Week 1, 20-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The win gave the Texans their first three game winning streak in franchise history. With the Texans leading 10-0 early in the third quarter, CB Jamar Fletcher forced a fumble by Chiefs FB Kris Wilson that Williams dove on had the presence of mind to take off for the 38 yard touchdown to give the Texans a 17-0 lead. Williams, the first pick in the 2006 draft from North Carolina State, recorded a career high two sacks on the day as the Texans defense limited Chief QB Damon Huard to a 53.6 QB rating. The Texans defense did not allow a touchdown for the eighth straight quarter dating back to the last season. Houston's streak stands a 122:41 since the team last surrendered a touchdowndown. Williams is the ninth Texan to win the Player of the Week award in team history. Williams joins LB DeMeco Ryans as members from the 2006 draft class to win the award. Ryans captured teh award in week 13 in 2006. CB Aaron Glenn won the defensive award in week 14 during the 2002 season.
Great job Mario! The HEALTHY sleeping giant is finally allowed to show everyone a glimpse of what is to come. The Texans defense is going to be a true monster.
there needs to be a photo shop of him jumping on and squashing reggie bush like mario did to those dang mushrooms
If this doesn't get him going, nothing will. I am very happy for him, because he has really sucked until this point.
Spoken like a true person-who's-only-looked-at-box-scores-and-doesn't-know-the-first-thing-about-defensive-line-play. Kudos.
