The Cowboys successfully moved Greg Ellis to an outside linebacker position in a 3-4 and he was playing extremely well in the position. Mario Williams is bigger, but I think he's also more of a physical freak than Ellis, so it might be worth a shot.
I just think if he was more disruptive, could rush the passer better and even get to the ball better, why not at least try it... because so far I am not seeing it at end. I have even wondered if he might end up beefing up a little and moving inside to tackle? anything to get more from that roster spot
There is a big difference between playing OLB for a 3-4 than a 4-3. A lot of teams draft DEs knowing they'll switch them to OLB (Babin, Kiwanukas sp?). With a 3-4, you can put athletes at OLB and have them go after the ball everytime, knowing you have 3 other LBs back there. With a 4-3, you have to have some skill to play LB. But I agree that it is at least worth a shot.
key words in bold. Mario was just an athletic specimen, it was the Texans who created that burden. Now, of course mario will have that pressure but "he" didnt create it or even ask for it...the texans placed it on him
i'm sure he's spending the money. edit: I do understand your point, but that doesn't totally excuse him. its like cato, utimately that was on the rockets, but cato could have still performed better
I have no idea whats that suppose to mean or how it's even relevant. the texans GAVE him that money for hmi to come play. so you would decline 35 Mill if it was offered? come one. be real
I think it's more that our OLBs have been so ineffective, and our DL so solid, that Kubiak is considering moving Mario in an effort to beef up the LBs without screwing the line. I don't know if this means flipping 4-3 to 3-4 or what though. Again, I have misgivings about Mario being game-ready to read plays and commit. It's a very difficult thing to ask even the quickest lineman to do without time to adjust. Evan
of course i wouldn't decline it. but i also wouldn't pretend it came without expectation. and the team better damn well have some expectations if they're throwing money around in a sport with a salary cap. because it absolutely affects the product on the field. (p.s. -- his agent negotiated to $35 million, right?)
I love the optomism but I think it has more to do w/ trying to get more production out of Mario. He hasn't been an impact player at anytime this season IMO. Most of the sacks he has gotten can be attributed to another player either getting to the QB first or misdirecting him. I really don't want to take anything away from those sacks, but I have yet to see Mario be the first one to the QB. Watching Mario during games really show what type of player he is, he either gets blocked and runs right passed the QB or gets straight stonewalled and gets nowhere near the play. But I'm willing to try anything to get something out of Mario.
Remember in season one how he struggled whenever they moved him from one side to the other of the defensive line. I mean, struggled even more. Now they want him to drop off the line? I can only guess they are seeing him get wrapped up early by the OT and this is seen as a way to give him a running start into the backfield...
He actually struggled when they were moving him between DT and DE, he still moves from one side to another throughout the game.
