You are the one who made a big fuss about "quantitatively proving" a particular point. As if you don't throw out opinions with a tone as if they are facts routinely. As if there could ever be such a thing (opinion as fact) in sports where collections of players play against collections of other players and no indivudual stats remotely capture that. You can provide evidence, certainly, but it always context bound and and where subjectivity will always be a part a judgements. Back to this thread, I am really thankfull Reggie Bush isn't in Houston. He was immensley overrated as a running back (college back and pro prosect). Too bad Bush didn't get stuck in Cleveland or Buffalo, NO deserves better. I hope Mario continues to out play him.
anyone else sick of the Reggie Bush cartoon drawing commercials? the one he ripped off of Gilbert Arenas... about being a zero/nobody and proving himself.
I don't know if it is a rip off considering there is like 5 different version of that. Bekham, Adu, and some others. But definitely enjoyed Reggie do absolutely nothing this season.
He was never a zero. He was said to be the best player in college, and one of the best all time. He was a general consensus 1st Overall Pick (We know what happened there), and was selected #2 Overall. Gilbert Arenas was a 2nd Rounder who rode the bench early in his NBA career. Big difference in being a "zero" and "proving himself".
I love looking at box scores and seeing Bush's inability to run the ball. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
But there is a significant difference in the two commercials. One is about a virtually unknown player emerging as a future star, and the other is about a former college star breaking through in the pros and getting the proverbial monkey off his back. They are two completely different commercials. One was completely under the radar whereas the other was under constant scrutiny. Very different.
You know what's funny about people saying "I want to see Mario consistently have games like last week" ... Panthers fans say the exact same thing about Julius Peppers. And less than two months ago, you guys would never have believed that Mario could ever be as good as Peppers.
Mario is so young and playing his first healthy season.Other teams game plan for him every week and most plays he sees the double team. With the young talent on the line with him, this defense has the chance to go down in history If everyone stays relatively healthy,we get Bennett set at the other corner, and make sure safety is shored up,we're going to be a fixture in the playoffs for the next decade...at minimum. The OLine will be strengthened and a stud back will come eventually. But it all starts with that defense. The Houston Texans made the right decision when they took the Manchild.
Do they really? Where do you read this? I don't keep up much with the Panthers fans. I know they were wondering where he was today - and rightly so. But his numbers have been pretty solid each season. In any case, I certainly hope Mario just continues to improve. There's no reason to not believe that possible. I just can't agree with the folks trying to push that he is a consistent, impact player. Not yet. But who knows, this season might be the one to show that to be the case. I certainly hope so; in addition to what we've seen so far it'll certainly be a sign the team has really turned a corner and will make some noise.
That's just it, Mario always seems be around the play rather than being the one actually making the play. Double teams are a fact of life and he's yet to develop a technique for dealing with them on a consistent basis. In fact, from what I'm seeing, his problems lie more in technique and attitude than anything else right now. He still relies on that bull rush and ends up blocked out of the play far too much and has problems keeping his "motor" revved especially when things get sticky. With him you just never know what you'll get: he was awesome last week, merely OK this week. Next week he could be just as easily be another guy out there - you just never know with him. If folks here are going to snicker about Reggie Bush & Vince Young, then they have to hold Mario up to the same high standards.
I get the feeling you havent specifically watched many other DEs play...I think if you critiqued other stud DEs as hard as you are doing on Williams, then you'd have a different opinion. Mario is being just as effective right now as Dwight Freeney or Julius Peppers. There is nothing to snicker about right now with Williams...other than the fact that he didnt put up "numbers" in yesterdays game, which is a horrible standard in which to measure for a DE.
Mario is doing just fine. Very good young defensive unit we've built. One more impact corner and this team is scary good at defense for years to come.
We should be able to get a pretty good player with the 32nd pick next year On another note, I was in New Orleans the last few days and of course I was at a sports bar watching the Texans game yesterday. Yes it's true they jock Reggie Bush like crazy but at the bar with the hard core Saints fans watching I heard "Reggie Bush sucks" from multiple folks. Of course I was talking mad smack saying "Reggie Bush is scared" "Bush is a hybrid back" "Second coming of Eric Metcalf" "Either he is too stupid to think he can run outside or he is too much of a p***y to get hit" "He is a product of the ESPN hype machine" As we walked out we were chanting "We will see you week 10 you one year wonders" "Reggie Bush Sucks" Man they were pissed off
I would be really interested to listen to New Orleans sports talk right about now. I wonder if they're dogging Bush or still holding out hope. Seriously, think about all the great players drafted after Bush that could have been wearing Saints uniforms. They fell for the hype. They were sucked into it and used a #2 overall pick on him. That's pretty hard to fathom. Bush may end up being a nice utility player, but he will never live up to the hype, the money they pay him, or the position they drafted him at. Mario or Vince is debatable (obviously...see this thread), but I don't think Mario or Bush is even a question anymore.
Some fuel for the Vince fire: Vince played pretty decently yesterday. Some "young-guy" mistakes, but overall pretty decent. The problem is, his team sucks. What was that, four dropped passes? Two in the red zone, was it? And a fumble? "Vince just wins" is true when he has a good team around him (how many Longhorns are already *starting* in the NFL? Incredible teams!). Kinda like "Barry just wins" was never true--Barry Sanders was one of the all-time great RBs to ever wear an NFL uniform, but his teams sucked. So Barry just lost.
Exactly how I see it. I can understand choosing Vince, but for the fans/media that still rip on us for not taking Bush, I just dont see it. No way in hell would I give up Mario for Bush right now.
i never thought it was. Bush is what you said, a utility guy and is a nice supplemental piece to have floating around in an offense but i never thought he would/could be able to be a primary, go to, guy. The texans needed a RB, not a slash type player that cant run the ball...especially with this style of offense
