Stopped by to see what the D & D was saying about Margaret Thatcher's passing away but I don't see a thread so am starting one. I have been hearing all of the praise of her on the news but a lot of comments I've seen on Facebook from people in Ireland are downright gleeful about her passing and wounds over her government are still raw in Northern Ireland. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZJh0m0E7Ozg?list=PL8E1EF72D9930815B" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Besides Irish Republican songs she also inspired a lot of music against her in the UK. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SfhxJiE38sE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xy3-R97wDKs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Personally I was never a fan of her's but I think a lot of what she did was necessary for the UK and admired the work she did with working with Gorbachev and Reagan to end the Cold War relatively peacefully. Just wondering what the rest of the D & D thought of her.
You already included Tramp the Dirt Down. I keep thinking of that song today. Elvis Costello did a fantastic job with it. Looks like his wish can come true. I was never a Thatcher fan.
I can't say I have strong feelings about since she was in power when I was a child, and in a foreign country.
For those of you too young to appreciate her, I think this sums it up. Margaret Thatcher never would have followed Bush into Iraq. She would have led the way.
I don't find it appropriate that people take advantage of this by saying good things about her and ask those with negative views to be quiet. So let's just al say RIP and leave it at that.
You say she is in 'hell' and then say 'RIP'. WTF. Who has asked those with negative views to be quiet? Also it is one thing to say she was terrible at her job, it is another to say she is in hell.
She grew up as a methodist, which may explain roots of her political views. For me, having experienced communism and an ubiquitous government in China, I like her views, although not for religious reasons.
"Socialists cry "Power to the people," and raise the clenched fist as they say it. We all know what they really mean - power over people, power to the State. ~Margaret Thatcher And so ends the "Era of Freedom" involving Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher. An era at the height of the democratic form of government around the world. Rest in Peace
Yeah ..., but I wouldn't be so conclusive . OTOH, the less equipped may have legitmate complaints that her policies, in a very forceful way, widened the inequality between the rich and poor.
Is there not inequality between the rich and poor in every developed country? We (and most countries) are a free market economy, and the free market creates those differences.
Sounds fascinating. RIP (Warning: actual content enclosed) Spoiler This is the D&D, and she was a polarizing figure. In my case, I don't celebrate her death at all, but I don't think anyone should fall down weeping either. Why not? Because she had a long life -- she had her innings, they might say in London. And she had the chance to enact her ideals on a nation. Those who thought she was wonderful can celebrate her life, and those who did not like her policies are merely reminded of what her time wrought. What I can respect about Maggie and Reagan is that I believe they genuinely believed they were doing the right thing. This sets them apart from many modern politicians.
Yeah, but its always about finding the balance, right? A free market doesn't necessarily mean a fair market.
In a free society we make different choices which result in different outcomes, including wealth accumulation. Inequality of outcomes is a feature of free will and economic liberty, not a bug.
