I didnt see anything in those clips which indicates/proves he can be successful at playing the 3 for an NBA team. So what if he can run up and down the court with other SFs. I cant believe Morey passed on Kawhi and Singleton. Not to forget he picked Donatas too. 2011 draft was a massive failure.
Oh and this clip shows him clearly creating his own shot from the post and face-up.. <iframe width="560" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/okmxUF5gNcI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Morey and staff have not missed on a first round pick to date. The only misses were in the second round with Dorsey and Jermaine Taylor. Every year we say OH NO on draft night but OH YES during the season. Most folks were shocked with the Patterson over Larry Sanders (a pick of need) pick too but Morey and crew were right. In addition, the staff may feel that Terrence Williams is better than Kawhi Leonard or Singelton. Terrence Williams is more athletic than Kawhi and Singelton dribbles like Trevor Ariza.
Morris does everything better than Bud except shoot the 3 (36 percent versus 39 percent in college), so I don't see how he can't be a SF.
We have yet to see Morris even PRACTICE, much less play in a NBA game situation. Playing the SF position in the NBA requires more than just being able to shoot the three and his skillset. A. He has to be able to defend SF's. B. He needs to be able make cuts and move around without the ball. Unless he is used in a screen and roll situation with one of the post players where he is the primary playmaker.(which he wont be.) C. His fit with the two post players must complement and not create spacing issues. (remember two seasons ago when Adelman tried Landry at the 3 with Scola, and Hayes.) The way he played in college will translate immediately in the NBA as a stretch PF. (Think Robert Horry with a post up game. good post up offensive player. Good fadaway shooter. Can space the floor and shoots threes.) However, if Marcus is put at the SF position then his skillset IN COLLEGE will not be utilized as well as if he played PF. At least on offense. I realize in high school he was the primary ball handler, but at the NBA level there is no telling if not only can he create for himself, but could he be an affective enough passer and distributor to create for others as well. If you simply replace Budinger with Morris in the lineup with the same offensive sets then you are going to be underutilizing Morris' skillset that he showed in college, and throwing off the balance with the current lineup. Believe me, I want Marcus to work out as a SF right this second as well, but I realize that the coaching staff will want him to play to his strengths this early in his career. If they want to keep the same lineup of Scola/Hayes/Patterson/Hill and run the same offensive sets then Budinger gives the team the best opportunity to win right now. If Morris can adjust his game and BEAT OUT Budinger eventually throughout the season, and help the team win then its a win/win. Right now its still a win even with him being a good PF as a backup. The Rockets are high on Patterson, but who knows Morris might very well beat out Patterson for minutes as a backup PF.
Morris will need to prove he is quick enough laterally to guard the 2s and 3s in the league, if he can do that, he probably becomes the starter at that spot, unless Chase suddenly develops a killer instinct. DD
Like McHale said at the press conference introducing the draftees, I see Marcus Morris playing a lot w/ D. Moteijunas. Since D-Mo likes to play outside and Marcus like to post up, they will compliment each other very well. Courtney Lee can defend the two's with this unit. I still think we need to trade for an athletic defensive stopper to play the Shane role w/ the first unit or try Terrence Williams. Chase should be a shooting specialist off the bench.
Umm since when does he need to guard the 2? There's no reason that Marcus Morris won't be a better defender than Chase coming straight into the league.
2s and 3s are interchangeable and you generally switch on picks or get stuck on one of them in transition. He won't have to guard the twos all the time, but he will at least need to be able to some of the time. He doesn't look overly quick, sort of reminds me of a better Mike Harris, albeit taller..... DD
Harris is a smaller but soild player that is in and out of the NBA (makes more money overseas)... can do most thing well when called upon, a NBA team will not lose just b/c Harris picked up some PT. (D-NBA all-star I think he may have a MVP there, too). He is what he is,(DD, I won't say it out of respect to you, lol) but said, I like seeing him in Rocket red. Most would see this as a "cut" at Morris... I do not ----> well rounded skillset ----> high BB IQ----> plays with heart -----> tweener that can score. If better and tall... than all is well. give time; time
I don't think it is a cut at all, I like Harris, if he were 6'8" he would be firmly in the NBA as a solid contributor. I was merely saying their games have some similarity, as you correctly picked up on. DD
Chase can't guard 2's or 3's, much less a chair, at the moment, so I don't think Morris' defense will be what keeps him back, at least relative to other options on the squad.
True The thing Chase can do though is shoot and cut off the ball, which opens things up for his teamates. DD
