McCarthy says he ‘always had a few questions’ about Santos résumé

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said that he “always” had some questions about Rep. George Santos’s (R-N.Y.) résumé, showing some of his first apprehension about the first-term New York representative weeks after revelations of Santos’s vast fabrications about his background.

“I always had a few questions about it,” McCarthy told CNN on Capitol Hill on Monday, referring to Santos’s résumé.

McCarthy also commented about a person working for Santos who allegedly impersonated McCarthy’s chief of staff to solicit campaign donations during his 2020 and 2022 campaigns.

“You know, I didn’t know about that. It happened, and I know they corrected it, but I was not notified about that until a later date,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy added that he had talked to Santos about the impersonation.

The comments from McCarthy follow a CNN report saying that Dan Conston, president of the McCarthy-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund PAC, had expressed concerns about Santos to lawmakers and donors, citing an unnamed source.

McCarthy has declined to call for Santos to resign over his résumé fabrications and embellishments, though several other New York House Republicans have.

“I try to stick by the Constitution. The voters elected him to serve. If there is a concern, and he has to go through the Ethics, let him move through that,” McCarthy told reporters last week, referring to the House Ethics Committee.

“He is going to have to build the trust here, and he’s going to have the opportunity to try to do that,” McCarthy said.

 

This is some bullshit. We expect our politicians to lie to us about what they are going to do about what they are going to do once they get in office. We also overlook little white lies on their resumes. Lies like "My GPA was a 3.9" when it was really a 3.2. However, to sit there and say "The voters elected him to serve" is asinine.

 

I do not think that the card carrying Rs give a flying **** if Santos is an international criminal ... even though the Ds would.

The Rs have no shame and can not be guilted into adult behavior. It is all about the winning. Ethics and morality be damned.

I'm sure many of them don't care but it shows that this isn't a party serious about governing. Kevin McCarthy doesn't really care about an agenda or principle and is so desperate to hold onto to his position that he's willing to deal with someone completely untrustworthy.

 

On the one hand, I get it. If Santos is removed and a special election is called, there is a real risk that the Dems will take the seat. And the Republican majority is slim. On the other hand, it isn't so slim that they'd lose control of the Speakership. Meanwhile, they're only going to be passing grandstanding bills that will die in the Senate anyway, so what does it matter if they have Santos' vote or not. We can say (again) "oh, they aren't serious about governing" but the Republican House's only job for the next two years is to be an impediment to Biden's agenda. That one seat isn't worth the negative press given they're only playing defense.

You have to kind of wonder how many other house members are curious to see what happens and then what they can get away with. It's like watching the idiot in a red sports car go 2x the speed limit. You can kind of increase your own speed and wait to see if he gets pulled over.

 

It only takes 5 GOP Reps turning against McCarthy to lose the speakership. Losing Santos reduces that to 4. It also only takes one Rep to move to remove the Speaker. It's not out of the realm of possibility that there is enough chaos in the Republican caucus that it leads to them losing the Speakership. It also could mean that they are ungovernable and not even organized to be an impediment to Biden's agenda.

 

The only thing Santos can do to upset republicans is say he agrees with Biden on something.

Republicans might see this as owning the libs and a reliable vote but he is defrauding Republicans who have voted and donated to him. He is defrauding McCarthy by having members of his campaign pretend to be from McCarthy's campaignt to solicit donations. Yet they've reward him with a seat on the Science Committee, even though he's so committed to facts he doesn't even use the same name always, and Small Business. There Santos does seem to have experience running multiple small business who's primary purpose was to grift.
