I agree Big M: "I think we would test the imagination if we shot worse than last season," Van Gundy said. "jvg is a quote machine. there's not a guy in the league that's better." Van Gundy was really funny at those Rowdie tryouts- very witty and human. I guess he has to keep the game face on-but his humor comes out in those quotes to media.
Basically, what JVG is saying is that he cannot possibly imagine that we'll shoot the ball worse than last year. He's saying that it's nearly impossible to shoot worse. We had a horrible year last year.
I'll try. "I think we would test the imagination if we shot worse than last season," Van Gundy said. Just means that JVG thinks the teams shooting was so bad last year that the only it could be worse is if someone imagined or dreamed it. Jvg is a quote machine. there's not a guy in the league that's better. A quote machine is someone that always has interesting ideas/remarks that newspaper people like to quote/write about in their stories.
You guys assume all wrong. He'll hit over 50% from 3 point range this season. He also will prove to be more than just a shooter.
I think he will be a decent rebounder for a back up 4. Certainly no worse than JHo. He also may have some passing skills as far as feeding the post, but we haven't seen much of him and Yao on the floor at the same time yet. Obviously I'm projecting based on an extremely small sample, but I have watched the games a couple of times. According to Bullard he has a mid-range game, and we have seen nothing of that yet.
Novak's shot reminds me of Reggie Miller... quick release and excellent form. He is a shooting guard in a power forward's body and he is looking to break out. With his accuracy coming to the forefront, i can see JVG designing plays for him already. He has a good a shot as any at Rookie of the Year.
i'm excited too, but we need to keep in mind that the game changes from preseason to the regular season. People are more motivated and they move faster. Open looks are going to decrease and pressure to make shots will be higher. Coaches are going to scout and players are actually going to read scouting reports. People are going to start going at Novak and crowding him to try to **** up his shooting.
That's right. Which is why he won't hit four 3pt shots a game on average. But if Novak forces defenses to adjust by covering him all the time, Tracy and Yao will destroy single the coverage.
That's what we have to hope for. If Novak can do that, and not be too much of a liability on the defensive end, he may end up getting more minutes than one should expect from a rookie taken in the 2nd round. Man, I still don't see how he fell to us. The worm has turned from last season. Luck is back with the Rockets.
Exactamente. People have compared Novak to Kyle Korver and Matt Bullard. Here's a comparison I haven't heard: Peja Stojakovich. Both are around 6'10" and neither are much more than average at anything besides shooting. I think he's got Peja potential. Imagine if we had gotten Peja this off season (on top of our other acquisitions)? People would be annointing us champs already.
I wouldn't get to the Peja comparisons just yet... Peja has proven for years he can at least play passable defense, we are not sure whether Novak can do that yet. He has looked OK during the preseason-- not getting manhandled too badly as far as I can remember and the rest of the team also were able to play aggressive help D around Novak to cover any weakness of his up, but we'll see when the regular season rolls around and the opposing scouts have disseted every possible weakness of his to exploit.
Peja's defensive weakness is exploited aplenty. I thought I read somewheres that Byron is planning on playing him at shooting guard. I sure hope he does that, especially defensively because Peja will get toasted a real dark brown.
I understand he's not Peja now. But if the hype is true, then maybe his ceiling is Peja - which is a heck of a lot better than we thought we were gettting.
The only hype I've heard on Novak is shooting. Period. If he eventually develops the ability to slash and draw fouls we'll take it. I don't like Peja; I dis him continually. But until Novak shows some indication of a floor game, his upside on offense has no chance of reaching Peja. But who knows, maybe Novak will surprise us all and learn to create his own shot at the NBA level. When that starts to happen, then let's talk about Peja.
