I agree that Morey needs to stop chasing Melo if he doesn't plan to resign. There's no point in giving up all your assets when we all know the Rockets aren't winning a championship by simply adding Melo.
He's betting that (1) Melo may be willing to give up money in order to leave (his agent may well be posturing), (2) the Rockets can work out an "extend and trade" for him before July 1, 2011 for him, or (3) the Rockets can work out a "sign and trade" for him after July 1, 2011 (or after the lockout).
Melo also said that he wouldn't resign with Denver, but now he is considering it. Saying he would resign with Denver is probably just an attempt to push the Knicks into actually offering a decent package to the Nuggets so he can be where he wants and get his money...but who knows, maybe the money is the most important thing for Melo at this point. If money really is what Melo truly wants, the risk of trading for him with no guaranteed extension may not be so risky after all.
Im sure Morey knows something about the new collective bargaining agreement, something like a franchise tag. Maybe that's why he is pursing Melo so hard.
I was wondering the same thing Rocket River Agents have an aweful lot of power. they are SHAPING the NBA more than players and owners It may need to be addresses in the CBA
Agree. I just don't see Boston letting the guy go. He can really effect a game on the defensive side of the ball and brings some serious toughness. I would love seeing the rockets getting the Perkins.
It's sensible, though not long term. It's simply a strategy of increasing our asset values. a) We've got a done of dead weight that we HAVE to ship out asap b) Getting Anthony, if only as a rental, generates buzz in a year that has been sagging terribly for this team and gives us a shot at being the #8 seed no one wants to mess with. c) If you can flip him out for better return than what you got him for, it's worth it. Morey is banking on some sort of Franchise Tag coming out of the CBA that will ensure teams don't get handed crap on a platter as "compensation" for losing their superstar (LeBron, Bosh S&Ts). d) Melo *could* blink and decide not to opt out of his deal if the new CBA will screw him as a FA. If there is a major cap between the extension and what a max contract would be in the new CBA, he could take the third option and keep the final year of his deal and give himself another 12 months to get to NY with an extension.
