Wow. No. Yugoslavia is not the example you're looking for here, at all. Its breakup was a catastrophe. If Yugoslavia had been able to remain intact through the transition to a market economy, it would be much, much better off than ex-Yugoslavia as a whole is today.
Thanks, Dubya. Dubya for the Hague like the Serbian guys. Chile brought Pincohet to justice and Guatemala has come close with their guy.
Even supposing that Bush is a war criminal, why is it that leftists are so damn eager to see him tried before an international court? Bush is an American and is under American law, so why not just have an American court try him?
Why both? If you're going to try a man for the same crimes twice ( which may or may not fall under double jeopardy in this scenario), you better have a very good reason.
Because Congress funded the war. We understand you hate conservatives and would love to throw them all in prison. You're no different than the guy who wants to try obama and personally execute him. There is one word for your type: irrational.
It's not the same crime twice. It's different parts of a crime in different jurisdictions. Why American law? His war crimes are in other jurisdictions and in breach of both international and domestic (in that jurisdiction) laws. Sure he breached American laws, but those are laws that your elected officials trounce on all the time (bypassing congressional approval for war). No one seems to care and I guess it's your right to not pursue charges against him as Americans. Personally I think the bigger crime is the unwarranted death of X number of Americans as a result of his actions.
I'm missing the part where this means that he should be tried by some international court which the United States does not recognize. At best, it might mean that he should be tried by the Iraqis, since that would be where his crimes were committed. If policy decisions that resulted in American deaths were crimes, every American president since at least FDR would be in jail for something or another. I've said it in earlier threads that the President has incredible, incredible leeway on what he can do with the military. Obama can tomorrow decide to nuke every city in Europe just because, and that isn't illegal.
