You can whine about cliches or you can approach the issue on a more evolved level.

People incapable of following the major rules should be incarcerated for a time where they can possibly be rehabilitated and learn to follow those rules. Some never do, so they end up locked away from those that do follow the rules. That prevents the majority of the populace from losing an eye. Some people are still going to lose an eye because "**** happens" and life isn't fair". And to sum it up, "Violence begets violence".

Some states have the death penalty, some don't. Most that have it, don't use it. I personally don't support it.

I would add to this list multi-decade sentences for trivial quantities of pot. Sure, Saudi still has anti-sorcery laws on the books and occasionally even kills people over it. But we lock folks up for years over a ****ing plant that the majority of the country wants legalized.

Of course, in Saudi, pot on your person would have a rather worse result. So meh.

Just a typical thread to reinforce conceptions of cultural superiority without addressing any real root causes.

A reference to Gitmo? While your overall point is valid, prisoners of Gitmo are not protected by the Bill of Rights to which AT referred.

Am I alone to think this way? Reading the news make me SMH. But if my family were the victims, AN EYE FOR AN EYE it is. SMH.

I can't say whether this is morally right or wrong, but it would certainly free up the prison population a bit if we adopted an eye-for-eye appraoch with certain crimes.

Can't really feel sorry for the perpetrator though, except maybe the age issue. If you stab someone in the back, paralyzing him for life, punishment should quite severe.

Then the application of the Bill of Rights is flawed.

The mere existence of Gitmo is a method of inflicting unusual punishment. Should the funding, maintenance and operation of an unusual punishment facility not be outlawed in the same way that a Centre of Excellence for Hijacking Planes would be outlawed under laws of terrorism?

Hell, shouldn't the funding, maintenance and operation of Gitmo be classed as a terrorist action?

These things are arbitrary. As you said, the overall point is valid according to the overwhelming majority of people, and thus the people drawing up and applying the laws are either corrupt or stupid.

Back to topic. Saudi law is draconian to you. If you're still going to vote in the people who ensure they continue, then stop whining and start recognizing that you're part of the problem.

Mathloon's view of the world: Sharia cruelties are caused by the USA. Everything bad that happens anywhere in the world is caused by the USA.

    Insert long, drawn-out sub-argument here.

Gross stats can be misleading. For example:

USA is #1 with a population of 315,000,000
England is #2 with a population of 54,000,000
    Germany is # 3 with a population of 84,000,000
    France is # 4 with a population of 65,000,000
    India is # 10 with a population of 1,241,000,000

Compared to England, we're doing great in terms of occurrence rates & population density. Compared to India....maybe not. Not to derail your point, I just think you pulled bad data to make it.

That map is complete BS. I assume that has to do with a) the definition of "crime" used for the map, b) with the fact that a lot more crimes go unreported in developing countries.

I can assure you that you will feel safer in Germany than in, e.g., Brazil.

No. . . you are correct. They simply post gross numbers

My point is that we can sit here and act like we have all the answers
the problem is crime, repeat offending etc is a big problem here
To an extent - I think prisons are too much of a confused state

    They should either
    1. Punish
    or
    2. Reform

Our system does neither . . . at least to a level where I am satisfied or to a level where we can be hypercritical of another system where the suppression of crime is relatively high compared to ours.

I really find it surprising that you are basically defending such punishments when you wrote this recently.

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=7794544&postcount=9

So even though you recognize how imperfect the law and legal system is you are defending irreversible punishments.

The fact that innocent people still get convicted should be reason enough to not have such punishments as these.
