Eh, I'd rather do what Adam does. 100 hot dogs doesn't quite sound as satisfying as a 14-cheese grilled cheese sandwich.
Yeah, I love(d) the show, but the new format blows. I don't care about seeing regular people do the challenges. They're not nearly as funny as him.
I used to watch the show all the time. But then I read Alton Brown's criticism of the show, and it really made a lot of sense. http://foodnetworkhumor.com/2010/10/alton-brown-is-right-man-vs-food-is-gluttonous-and-disgusting/ At the end of the day, it really is a celebration of gluttony and all of the worst parts of American food culture. I can't support that. Plus Adam looks like he's gained about 50+lbs since he started the show, poor guy. Eating 20,000+ calories in one sitting every other week will certainly shorten your life span and expand your waist line, no matter what you're doing in the "off-season".
Yeah I haven't even watched it since it changed. It's good that he stopped doing the challenges but then that's what made the show fun in the first place. Regarding Alton Brown's criticism...he's right it is a celebration of gluttony. I have no idea why Adam is throwing such a hissy fit about it either. Indulgance? C'mon! When I watch the show I can't help but feel what other countries (and those less fortunate) must think about us gorging on massive, artery-blocking, heart-attack inducing plates of food that could serve 5 people easily. As far as the popularity it brings mom and pop stands, well that's not necessarily a good thing. I remember seeing a Diners, DriveIns, and Dives episode featuring a taco stand out in Rosenburg. Afterward I checked it out on Yelp and it was getting bad reviews. And my wife's coworker even said after the show filmed there, the place went downhill fast. Started trying to capitalize on their newfound popularity, sacrificing quality in the process. That said I'd like to tryt one of those challenges one day
Yeah I've only seen a few episodes and it only seems like Glutton vs. Food. The only interesting challenges to me are when he has to eat a few really spicy wings or something similar. When he loads up on thousands and thousands of calories to the point of hurling and passing out I cringe because of how wasteful he is. Let alone the fact that the restaurant 'audience' has the most scripted lines to say and ask him and all have to feign interest in him while he stuffs his face full.
I'm reminded of a King of the Hill episode where Bill becomes a competition hot dog eater, and he's competing in a contest, downing dog after dog, and everybody cheers for him, except that he soon discovers that the cheers are really for him acting like a slob and eating like a pig and in fact some people are laughing and disgusted by it. When you're doing a spicy food challenge or moderately difficult quantity challenge that's one thing. But when you're asked to eat 6,7,8 lbs of food in 30 minutes or less, you have to wonder if people are really praising your success or just cheering for the train wreck that is unfolding.
I was thinking that too, because he's not personally engaging in the chowfests, but putting someone else up to it. That said, I don't watch it so much to see someone eat an deadly large portion of food or wings that tip over 1 million scoville units - I just like seeing the food these places offer on their menus and where they are located.
^^ Yeah same here. I checked out Salt Lick just because I saw it on his show. And I was disappointed in the least.
