i like all those shows, Triple D with Guy FIery - yes he was in houston about 2 mos ago but never knew where he was filming at. Man v Food i like to watch but some of those challenges are a big blahhh Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman...he's quite an interesting man. The show with Anthony (whatever his last name is) is also a good one.
You've never heard of the 72 oz. steak challenge? Where are you from?!? http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/book-review-story-of-the-free-72-oz-steak/
I know he went by the Red Lion Pub on Shepherd. Wouldn't ever consider that place as a "go to" if you're visiting Houston. I went there and asked what he tried. After hearing the items, I left. Not a big fan of curry, personally.
A bunch of us from work went to Brick Lane last week and watched 3 of my coworkers do the Phaal challenge...thats the curry so hot that they wear gas masks when they cook it. www.bricklanecurryhouse.com All three completed it. One guy, Dave, did it in 5 freaking minutes...he broke the record. The other two took an hour to complete. They were all miserable the next day at work.
This thread is on point. Signed, I regularly watch Triple D, M vs. F, and Bizarre Foods. Never seen No Reservations though. Triple D is my favorite.

These shows are why I don't watch mainstream television much anymore. They're awesome and make me want to travel around the US and abroad whenever I see them. Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations is the most cultural show, I think. I love it. Yes, he eats street vendor foods, but unlike Zimmern's show, he gives more insight into the people, scenery, and culture rather than gross-out factor while sampling the food. The dude is a recovering heroin or LSD addict, I think. Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods is just about the freakiest show on food. This dude will eat just about anything. Yes, he eats street vendor food, too, but this guy goes nuts. He'll go into the jungles of wherever, find a tribe, and share raw worms they just dug out of a tree with them. Pig testicles, cow intestines, raw hearts, cow urine, rotting meat heated up, he'll eat/drink it at least once. It still kills me this guy's kryptonite is the durian fruit. He eats pig face, grubs, scorpions, etc, but cannot stand durian. LOL. Adam Richman's Man v. Food is where the guy goes around the US and tries to take on all the restaurants that have their crazy eating challenges. He's a Yale drama/acting grad, I think. He seems like a cool guy to hang out with, but I think he'll drop dead soon with what he tries to put away. By the way, he'll be hitting up Little Rock, Arkansas later this year, Lil Pun (sometime in November, I think). Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is the show where the blonde-haired guy drives around to hole-in-the-wall places around the US and tries the food. I've visited a bbq place in Oklahoma just because he did a show on it.
I was going to post this the other day when I first saw it, but didn't know how many people on here would be interested. The KC Royals broadcasters get duped by a Guy Fieri impersonator : <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J3VTM3fgyVI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J3VTM3fgyVI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I disagree. Bizarre Foods is better... less talk, more eating weird stuff. Zimmern is more adventurous than Bourdain (with eating, at least), too.
Well, I just don't get a chance to go to Amarillo, Texas as often as I'd like to these days.... I seriously think I could do that if not for the baked potato. If it was cooked how I like it (medium rare), I honestly think I could knock that out. I'm sure the quality of beef in Amarillo is top notch.
That challenge is legendary in Texas, though, man! I've never been there, but knew about it. The only thing I'd hate is having to pay for the thing when you find out your ego was bigger than your appetite.
It is pretty much considered the originator of the "eat the whole thing and it's free" challenge. http://cityguides.msn.com/articles/article.aspx?cp-documentid=19549110&page=2
Here's a chron article about that Big Texan Challenge : http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/travel/texas/aroundtexas/3494793.html
I agree about the travel thing. I am insanely jealous, especially after watching each episode of No Reservations. Bourdain did a good amount of hard drugs in his 20's if I remember correctly. His book, Kitchen Confidential, is a great read about his career in culinary world and details said drug use. He also shares restaurant insider tips, like don't eat seafood at a restaurant from Sunday to Tuesday. Another of his books, A Cook's Tour, is like his show in book form (actually the book came first, and someone decided to make a show from it). I also find it crazy that durian, of all things, makes Zimmerman chuck. I get that people don't like it or hate it, but seriously? Considering his track record that doesn't make sense at all. I enjoyed his show for what it is, but it seems like there haven't been any new episodes in a long time. And it's getting a bit monotonous when the show focuses too much on the still beating cobra heart he's going to put into his mouth and nearly ignores the exotic country in the background.
Um, Bourdain did eat the anal linings of a pig that was caught by a tribe. The crap was squeezed out right in front of him before they threw it on the fire.
I think they'll have new ones in September. The most recent ones were in June, I guess. I think if he started probing the culture of the country he's in and providing anything more than the whimsical approach he usually does, his show would pretty much overlap what Bourdain's show does.
Zimmern would've asked them not to squeeze the crap out it before eating it. Actually on an episode where he was in Uganda or Tanzania, he commented that while eating some intestinal soup, they should've cleaned out the entrails because he could still taste the stuff the animal ate. lol.
Zimmern's show is all about the shock value, pretty much like almost all reality TV shows these days. Bourdain's show is way more than that, he actually gives you a glimpse into a foreign culture, something Zimmern seems to know/care very little about.
