Fat people suck anyways. I don't want to sit next to a blubber ass. Pay for what you use.

Fat people have absolutely no argument in this debate. None. Their position is completely without merit.

    1) When you purchase a seat on an airplane, you are purchasing the right to occupy a given amount of space. An airplane has a finite amount of space which determines the number of seats it can sell. Should a person need extra space, that person must purchase this space.

    2) There is a very fine line between what is discrimination and what is not. For instance, are fat people discriminated against at a restaurant? Because they are larger, they require more food. More food costs more money. Is this discrimination? Obviously not. Fat people have more surface area and must purchase larger clothes. Using more fabric means that these clothes cost more than smaller clothes. Is this discrimination? Obviously not.

    3) Economics. At the time that Southwest announced this policy, they said that as few as four seats on a plane determine whether the flight is a profitable one or not. Because of this policy, there is no flexibility on the part of the airline, to reduce the number of seats on the plane, thereby creating more space. It would be financial suicide and would lead to their collapse. The airline industry is already on economic welfare from the government. It is in a state of financial ruin. Now is not the time to further weaken them financially.

    4) Southwest's business model. Southwest provides a very attractive alternative for travelers. They offer low fares which allow people who do not travel often the opportunity to do things they otherwise could not do. By accommodating for fat people, Southwest would be *forced* to hike up prices for all customers, thereby limiting the travel opportunities for many hard working people.

    5) The majority has spoken. Southwest has for a long time claimed that the number one complaint that they receive from customers is sitting next to fat people. All of us have experienced it at some point. It sucks royally. An anecdote: One time on a trip back from New York (3.5 hour flight), I was sitting in my seat waiting for all other passengers to board. I am in the aisle and a man is two seats over from me by the window. The plane is booked to capacity. I know that the middle seat will soon be occupied. More passengers file in and still no one has claimed the middle seat. Then I see him. A hugely obese man is lumbering down the aisle, turning slightly at each row so as to make room for his gut to make it down the aisle. I know instantly that he is going to sit next to me. Sure enough, he stops at my row and says the following, "Could you lift the armrest, I've got the middle seat." I respond politely, "I'd prefer not to do that." He gets upset *at me*. Ridiculous. I do not respond well to slothful ogres with the nerve to show emotion at me. Why in the hell should I raise my armrest, so that this behemoth can encroach upon my space and make me sit uncomfortably for almost 4 hours? No way. I paid for this space, and I intend to use it. Fortunately, this beast's friend was sitting in the row in front of me and offered to exchange seats. The conflict was resolved peacefully (lucky for the fat man).

I never fly. I take the bus because im paranoid. I'd rather sit next to a nice fat person compared to sitting really really close to a weirdo that talks about funked up stuff the whole time.

hmm, i wonder what it is about YOURSELF that you don't like.

anyone who has this much hatred toward people that they don't even know must have some serious emotional problems. you must first learn to love yourself, then you will be able to accept people for who they are and not judge them by the color--er--mass of their skin, but by the content of their heart.:)

back to the plane issue...hey, forget flying, have you ever seen the rides at Astroworld? those seats are tiny!!!

I agree. I fly a lot and I really dislike having to sit next to people who occupy half of my seat (which happened once or twice to me in the past - on flights to Houston, of course...).

The suggestion to let them sit in a seat where there is a free seat next to theirs is one possibility, but not really fair because everyone would like to have that (I would) and they would get it just because they weigh more. Same thing goes for the fatty row. I don't see why they should get larger seats just because they are overweight. Sorry.

I am with Trader_Jorge on this one. People want to talk about 'discriminating against the obese' in the same light as we would about the handicapped, which is ridiculous, because people can control their obesity. I have no desire to accomodate for obese people, especially when it comes to them sitting next to me on an airplane. Seating a fat person next to a normal person on an airplane is discriminating against the normal person.

Alot of you guys are asses, seriously. Yeah, being overweight isn't a good thing, but coming to post here just to call people "Blubber asses", "Fatty McGhee", and "fat a$$" is about as mature as what the ticket agent did.

"Probably around 100+ flights" I have either gone at a different time than I wanted to, flown out of the way, or even paid MORE than SW's rates just to NOT have to fly SW.

I have gotten nothing but sh!tty service from them EVERY TIME I fly them, and have not flown SW in 8 years or so.

Do you think that maybe, perhaps, their service might have changed 8 years since you flew them? Just seems like if you are basing your opinion of the company on incidents that happened 8 or more years ago, then things are likely a bit different now.

Some people just shouldn't fly, and should only do so for emergencies. This would include young children, people who buy $5 air plane beer on a morning flight, people who complain about the uncomfortable seats and crappy food, and the people in the window seat who refuse to lower the shutters at least half way. You know who you are!

Now if big people need that space, they should pay for it. I took a flight last week and was sitting diagonally because El Guapo was crowding me out. Not only was he fat and smelled like Doritos, his freaking hairy arms kept brushing up against me. Disgusting!

I fly SW 3-4 times a month to Chicago {from Omaha} and I have never had a problem with them. Granted the flights are always packed but I always arrive on time and the customer service on SW is excellent IMO. I do agree that larger people should have to pay for an extra ticket although the criteria for such appears sketchy at best.
