I think Webber is a much better comparison for Malone than Dirk. Malone is like Webber - Shot Blocking - Passing + Dirty Play + Durability.
I haven't chimed in for some time now but could not resist this. How soon we forget.... we aslo beat Seattle, a team we always had problems with before Barkley arrived. We had lost to Seattle the three previous years we had faced them in the playoffs...including a sweep in the second round after winning back to back championships. The two years we did win the championship we should thank Denver and L.A. for knocking out Seattle in the first round so we didn't have to face them.
right but he said "minus blocks, minus passing, plus...., plus ..." which is actually a really apt comparison in my mind. because A webber doesn't block that many shots either so they are really quite similar, the only big difference is the durability.
what were the play-off numbers comparisons the year we lost to Utah in 6?? Barkley v. Malone? Wasn't that 97?
I would just like to remind you that before Barkley came, the Sonics owned us year after year. The year directly before acquiring Barkley and directly after winning the second championship, if I recall correctly, the Sonics actually _swept_ us out of the playoffs. The year we acquired Barkley, the year we got beat by Utah in the WCF, we beat the Sonics in a playoff series for the first time in who knows how long. We wouldn't have even gotten to the WCF if it weren't for Barkley. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, right? And I am not sure, but I vaguely recall Barkley being injured in that series and out for a few games, and I vaguely recall that non-call bear hug by Karl on the three point line at the buzzer that let Stockton bury the three that finished the series. I'm not certain if I'm thinking the right year here, but definately we wouldn't have even _gotten_ to face Utah without Barkley.
I was for the Barkley trade, but I always disagreed that they made the trade to 'beat Seattle'. I think they made the trade to become a better team. Also, Seattle only 'owned' the Rockets when Hakeem got injured/past his prime. They didn't own them in the '93 playoffs - the teams were pretty much even. They didn't play in '94 or '95. In '96, Hakeem was on the downside, the team battled injuries all year long, and Seattle had the homecourt as well as a 64-18 record. The Seattle team the Rockets beat in '97 was not quite as good as the '96 team.
From 1992-1996 the Rockets went 4-16 against Seattle in the regular season. In 1993 they lost 3-4 in the playoffs. In 1996 they lost 0-4 in the playoffs. The Rockets should be happy they didn't face Seattle in the two championship years. They would have lost. http://www.clutchfans.net/opponent_history.cfm?TeamID=14
Barkley was injured in 98, the bear hug happened in 97. Some people like to say that the Barkley trade made the ROX unable to beat Utah, but in reality first cheating and then an untimely injury kept the ROX from beating Utah in consecutive years (also possibly the fact that Utah was at their peak at that time, going to the NBA Finals both years).
