    Name Game

Karl Malone often tests the patience of Utah Jazz fans when he opens his mouth.

But off the court -- with his mouth shut -- is when the Mailman makes his greatest statement.

The Sporting News, in its July 7 issue, listed Malone as the No. 1 "Good Guy" among NBA players for his good deeds in the community.

Malone was touted for his quiet assistance of those in need in Utah, for his involvement with group projects like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and get this, for doing it without fanfare.

Among other NBA, NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball and NASCAR stars, Utah native Shawn Bradley drew praise as one of the good guys in terms of public service.

TidbitsJimmy Padgett of South Jordan and his team of quarter horse geldings -- Niftyandthrifty and Apologist -- are featured in the July issue of Western Horseman magazine. They are recognized for winning the world cutter and chariot racing title in Ogden earlier this year. . . .

Utah State senior tight end Chris Cooley, a former Logan High standout, was named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation"s top collegiate tight end. . . . Joshua Lee, a 15-year-old long track speedskater in the Utah Olympic Oval program, has been selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee to participate in its 10th session of the F.L.A.M.E. (Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere) program. . . .

Weber State University athletic trainer Nancy Weir received her 25-year award at the National Athletic Trainers" Association meetings in St. Louis, Mo. . . .

Brothers Pat and Kevin Tillman, who left their sports careers to join the Army, were chosen recently to receive the ESPY"s Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Pat Tillman played four seasons with the NFL"s Arizona Cardinals before enlisting in the Army in May 2002. Kevin Tillman was a former minor league baseball prospect with the Cleveland Indians. . . .

Utah State assistant athletic media relations director Lis Ericson has resigned to accept a similar position at Michigan State. . . .
