    Planned route doesn't count. Check the previous days. At least the one yesterday showing bypassing that area.

    I doubt it. Not with our economy barely off life support.

    Very dumb question in the midst of this tragedy. If a big jet gets hit by a military-grade missile, does it really come down and make a crash site, full of really big pieces? The crash site looks like a lot of intact plane crashes at high speed.

    Naively, I'd think a missile would just about aerosol the poor airliner up at 30,000 ft and you wouldn't get anything like a traditional crash site.

    It's *possible* that nothing was shot down here and that we have a more conventional tragedy in a white hot political area being, what else, exploited for political points.

    RIP to the passengers. Just a horrific way to go.

    Latest on CNN is that the number of souls on board was 300+, and that 23 were Americans. The jet was at 32,000 feet from the report I read. Actually, B-Bob, there are pieces scattered all over the place of different sizes. Radar indicates that the plane came apart at altitude, thus the scattered debris field. Little to nothing, so far, in the way of bodies or parts of bodies being found. Looks exactly like it was shot down, in my opinion. Incredible.

    The missle could hit the wing not the fuselage

    The crash site supposedly has a diameter of 9 miles. I'm not sure what a traditional crash site would be.

    Primary logical options:
    * total mechanical failure
    * Missile from rogue separatists. Maybe even drunk youngsters playing with big equipment.

    Less logical options:
    * separatists do this intentionally, as a policy. I don't see what they'd gain, other than attention?
    * Russians do this. Again, why on Earth? Do they benefit from the world hating the separatists more than ever?
    * Ukrainians do this, just so they can blame the separatists. This seems ridiculous also.
    * meteor coincides with conflicted border region that other jets are avoiding. Super, super unlikely.

    Am I missing something? Just don't see how any organization could really authorize this. It doesn't help anyone.

    My guess is traditional crash site would the size of Carl Herrera's average threads in the GARM.

    Too soon?
