This is another problem with social media. We can pick or chose our facts and just dismiss those we don’t agree becaue they don’t fit our world view. This is a big problem on the Right but it certainly exist across the political spectrum. I’ve seen some disturbing stuff from the left regarding claims that Ukraine started the war with Russia and that Hamas’ attack on Israel wasn’t they bad or even a false flag. The internet provides us with tons and tons of information. The world is a confusing place and much of the information we get is contradictory and unclear. This is why critical thinking is so important yet instead of relying upon things like Occam’s razor we see what I call “uncritical thinking”. Where we rely instead upon ideological and partisan lens to filter and interpret facts.
You probably don't realize it but you are inadvertently espousing a very racist point of view here. Nationality is not based on race. You seem to have this weird idea of what "an ethnic German" needs to look like. Germany is a country in the center of Europe, with people of many different origins. I was born in Germany, grew up there, never had a different passport - this has nothing to do with "I identify as", it's the only nationality I have ever had. Same goes for your former Judo student. Really weird post by you.
Right it’s racist because you choose to identify with your German self even though half your background isn’t ethnically German. Is that not a fact? there’s nothing wrong with that. You can identify as German for whatever reason you choose to. You could identify as Asian too. Your defensiveness shows though why identity is important to people and why it’s just common courtesy to respect that identity especially if it causes no harm to you. Also to add you raise a good point that Germany is a country with a lot of people of different origina. Which is also why I find it interesting how you frequently criticize immigration in Europe.
First of all, you are still being racist. There is no such thing as being "ethnically German". Do you believe there is such a thing as being "ethnically American"? Secondly, I am not "defensive" at all. I am educating you about your racism. Thirdly, in your weird, awkward attempt at constructing some kind of argument, you are actually making a point against it: No, you cannot change your nationality simply by "identifying as" whatever. There is a process involved, since holding the passport of a certain country comes with legal rights and obligations. Sure, you could try to "identify as" an Eskimo from Greenland tomorrow. Good luck getting any border agents anywhere to "respect that identity, especially as it causes no harm to them". Hint: None of them would give a flying **** about what you "identify as".
Yeah right you’re not being defensive at all. Also there is such a thing as ethnic American. That applies to native Americans.
I do find it interesting they I said that it’s ok for you to identify as a German as being racist. If you wan the answer to what an ethnic German is I think you know the answer already as you have stated several times that you are only half German. As you note you’re a German citizen and grew up there. So legally you’re all German. Why then do even you describe yourself as being part German?
pet? Also, you clearly have no counter to the point that nobody cares about what nationality you "identify as". Your legal rights depend on what your nationality objectively is, as evidenced by your passport. Since you embarrassed yourself with your awkward posts, you are just pretending you didn't just get educated.
Meh - everyone these days just points fingers and cries racism - it is the easy way out. National identities or pride has gotten nearly as many people killed as Religion. DD
Actually @rocketsjudoka is right here and you are wrong. There is a Germany ethnicity that originates from Germanic tribes that lived in what is now West Germany. There is a genetic footprint within the genome that descendants of those people have. This is factual and not racist. One calling it racist in fact demonstrates that they do not know what racism is.
Ethnicity is broader than race. I think ATW equates the two to be equal and why he is getting so confused.
was kinda hopeful to see what's inside this thread.. Tinman being on your ban-list is not going to make you miss him any less. Talking from experience. He's got that addictive personality & charm! As far as ethnicity goes, once a (part) Jew always a Jew but can change nationality and become an Israeli upon request. (Today heard of a Chinese Jew getting citizenship). Ethnicity is more permanent than nationality. Can we criss-cross all the ethnicity, so there is none left - is that anti-eugenics? Maybe, that will Make CF Great Again!
I chuckled.. I don't have any trans friends. (Just saw on here that it's like .6%, so if on average a dude my age has 1 friend, then I'm not a transphobe for that being the case). I chuckle at a racist joke told by that race representative sometimes too. Should I self castigate myself now for having a chuckle prone brain? ffs
It isn't about the politics of it. It's that it was a joke with the punchline playing off the name of the planet, Uranus. Elementary kids now are already tired of the joke by the time they get out of the fifth grade. So the idea of the joke being made by an adult for an audience of adults is wasn't at all funny to me, but if it amused you, then that's okay for you.
