well I suppose I would try the Ram first, then power supplies are fairly simple but I'd find someone to help you the first time you change one you will probably have to take out the motherboard depending on your case oh and before you touch anything on the inside of your computer, make sure you ground yourself
ground myself?................................. Im kidding. But seriously Id like to know about that software before I open her up.
You could try this software http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/downloads/detail/1002-2086-8596189.html or one of these http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/downloads/search/1001-2086-0.html?cat=2086&sort=downloads Can't say that I have used them, but they claim to test hardware.
I am betting on the memory also. If you need to get more memory I would suggest Crucial, Corsair or Mushkin brand memory. The power supply also could be the issue whenever I have had one go out its usually been reboots not freezes but if you do end up needing one I would get a AMD approved 400Watt for the XP 1900. Some good brands IMO are Antec and Enermax. Hopefully its just a memory issue.
I will say RAM for the third time and suggest Viking in addition to what Mr. Scary said. Just get another RAM chip at Best Buy, swap them out and see if it does it still, then take the chip back to Best Buy.
Well I guess I have to open 'er up. Ill try this, but are you sure best buy will take it back opened? I have been screwed by them before....
I just did this two weeks ago I think you have 14 days to return it. Just ask them when you buy it and make sure you get the right kind of RAM.
Im talking to tech support people in last ditch effort... the first thing the guy made me do didnt work... bastards......... and dont you think if you are going to work tech support for a company in america you should learn how to speak enlish. He was trying to say msconfig, I heard msconkimoeaskhflkdhal;kfhls;kjl.
many companies are beginning to outsource phone support to other countries. I read an article a month or so ago about a web hosting firm laying off its 30 person call center, to route all support calls to a firm in India. Supposedly the Indian phone techs were just as knowledgeable about computers, fluent in English, trained to use "American sayings" and even greeted the phone call with an American name. On your end, you would have never known the person you're talking to is in a different part of the world, but hey, hopefully you get your problem solved, and the company saves money. just sucks for the 30 people who lost their jobs.....
I havent actually opened up my computer yet, I have been trying to talk to tech support. I called them back and was on hold for an hour and a half and then I hun gup. I am now more pissed than ever... I think I am going to open my computer up and see if I have one chip or two and go to best buy and buy the stuff accordingly. The thing is, my warranty should pay for all of this but I cant a hold of these bastards.
Ok, I opened her up and its 2 256 chips of valueRAM . Does valueRAM suck ass, because it sounds like it does........... Im going to best buy tonight and buying memory........
anything that has the name value in it.. pretty much sucks..haha before you buy RAM, try taking one of the sticks out (by pushing on the white levers at the same time on both sides) and then turning on your comp and see how it does. If it is still screwed, switch it out and test the other RAM stick.
ValueRam == no name brand Here's what you do though, since you have two sticks: Put one in at a time. Use the PC with just one in there and see how it works. Then remove it and put the other in. See how that works. If you have one bad stick of RAM, this will show it. If I were going to make a RAM purchase, I wouldn't buy it at Best Buy. I'd wait until the morning, then buy RAM from one of the great local companies like <a href="http://www.puicorp.com">PowerUp</a> or <a href="http://www.axiontech.com">Axion</a>. The only memory I would buy is Micron/Crucial (the same company), Mushkin or Corsair. Crucial is usually the best deal. Kingston is okay too, but I stick to the big 3. Axion has Crucial 256 Megs of PC 2100 for $53, and PowerUp seems to only have generic right now, or Corsair for $75. Personally, I'd buy the stuff from Axion. They are GREAT and always have top quality stuff.
Ok, I went to go play tennis, so I didnt go to best buy. Ill try your suggestion vengeance, but I have a warranty in place so if anything goes wrong they rreplace it for free. Thanks for the recommendations also.
Vengeance, I tried what you said and it seems the ram is not the problem. With each standalone stick my computer froze... im back to feeling hopeless So, what else could this be now that we have ruled out the RAM Note: As I inspected the RAM stick I noticed the Kingston brand name on there... maybe its not as ****ty as I thought.,.
One correction as I sit here chuckling at this thread and my bud Droopy : ValueRam is made by Kingston. Carry on.
