I heard that Avery was getting all new assistants.... has anyone considered it might be Del Harris getting the new assistant job? He was a former rocket, sort of... right?
you never know. onw thing I do know is that JVG is sick and tired of the Rockets not getting over the hump. He noted that he was happy during the season. He feels as if this is the best team he has ever coached. But, talent... we need it.... young talent.... we have to have it. Trust me... we WILL get it. Don't be surprised if a former Rocket guard (who is still involved in the game.. one way or another) will grace us with his presence on the Rockets bench next year.
Didn't someone report that Clyde was in the office with JVG or CD recently. Edit: Oops. It was page 4 of this thread. It guess that leaves out Mario Elie since he was a small foward. If not clyde, Murph???
John Lucas probably. The oregan article that mentioned Lucas with the Trailblazers said that Lucas had a change of direction.
Its Calvin baby, its gotta be Calvin. I always wanted to see him coach. He has the enthusiasm and respect from players that is integral to great leadership and motivation in the locker room and on the court. I could think of no one more deserving or overlooked in the Rockets organization to get that spot on the bench. And from what I hear he used to semi-coach in the Rudy days -- going to practices and shootarounds and giving pointers/encouragement.
You know, I could actually care less who the new assistant is going to be. I think we've got a great coach in JVG and some great assistants already. I'm not worried about the coaching staff at all. It's the Rockets roster I'm concerned with. The idea of Calvin Murphy being an assistant to JVG does amuse me. They'd be the NBA's odd couple. JVG - the deep circles under his eyes, the balding that you could easily believe is taking place because he's pulling his hair out, the somber attitude. Calvin - always wearing loud clothes, always smiling and laughing, always eating a damn cookie. Just tell me they have to share an apartment and sign me up for that sitcom.
I think the next coach will be another big man. JVG brought in Ewing just to work with Yao and I'm sure he is not completely satisfied w/ Yao's development. I'm hoping it is Moses. The guy was a rebounding machine and I think that is one of Yao's weaknesses.
It's just hard for me to believe that we can get anything worthwhile for dumping Sura and Wesley (despite his expiring contract) better than what they can give us. If a deal's in place I applaud our agressiveness, but it's difficult for me to believe.
Easy. Mario Elie. His wife and kids live here. He's from N.Y. He won championships here and in San Antonio. And he's gonna help bring Horry, his old bud, back home to Houston to finish his career.
That means either Mario Elie is going to be an assistant or we are going to trade for Sam Cassell. Of course neither gives us "young talent" ;-)
