The bridges are sturdy man, the ship just happen to hit the right spot that caused this issue. It could happen with any bridge.

It looked like it was constructed by Michael Bay and Associates.

I think Minnesotans are secretly excited by this bridge collapse because they can talk about the I-35W bridge collapse again. I just saw on local news them showing a clip of Pete Buttigeig mentioning the I-35W bridge collapse.

It is, but look at the size of the ship. It's 1/3 the length of the collapsed span, probably weighs over 220,000 tons and is carrying hundreds of shipping containers. It's longer than most skyscrapers are tall.

This is another example of creating a ridiculously complex system in the search for squeezing profits out of every bit of efficiency. We should have more redundancy, more simplicity, and smaller, more adaptable systems. The bridge was built 50 years ago when ships weren't nearly as big. This will have an over-sized effect on everything related to shipping and supply/distribution at bot the regional and national level to commuter and commercial surface traffic--which also means jobs, schools, etc.

Are you talking about the bridge or the ship design?

    I would not disagree.
The push for maximum efficiency with minimal cost
means sacrificing safety, comfort and some common sense.
Americans are more than willing pay in their lives, health and money
so Corporations can prosper and we can get rhetoric about being the best in the world

My fave part of the Hangout is we can talk about an accident like this without blaming it on someone’s skin color. Go Hangout!
