They have the core of the team (Berkman and Oswalt) locked up for $30 million/yr., and that's a damn good core to build around.

Hampton was traded for Cedeno and Dotel (who helped us get Beltran). Kile left for like $1 million more. Mark Portugal? Eh.

Anyone who knows anything about Houston Astros baseball over the past decade wasn't really stressing out about this. See contracts given to Biggio, Bagwell, Hidalgo, Berkman, Wagner, etc.

can someone explain to me why there is such a thing as a player option? might as well just make it a guaranteed extra year b/c who in their right mind would not take that option?

well, you'd have to ask Mr. Oswalt, himself. his agent likely negotiated that in there for him.

Because 5 years from now, if the market is paying $25MM for a good pitcher and he maintains his level of play, he can renegotiate. But worst case, he knows he gets $15MM or whatever it is.

I'm no math major, but that doesn't add up to $73MM, only $71...Am I missing something...

There is a 2 million dollar club buyout of year 6.

Also the 16 million dollar year 6 option is an Astros' option, not a player option.

"However, since they came so close to trading him, you have to wonder how contract talks are going with Oswalt." -- SI.com assflapper Jon Heyman, yesterday.

I didn't know that Richard Justice doubled as a sports agent. I guess he can't live on his writing.

I'm so happy. Roy is my favorite pro athlete of all time. I've watched him since he was called up. I have a feeling that someday he may have his own statue out in front of MMP.

They were probably joking...I caught the end of that before Lance started slarving all the Chronicle sportswriters. Once he did that, I had to switch.

"Roy Oswalt won't ever feel the same about the Astros. Maybe he was going to test the free-agent market after the 2007 season regardless of what happened. Knowing his name was thrown out in discussions with the Orioles almost guarantees it." -- Richard Justice, July 31
