My point is our laws should not be dictated by religious code. Bigtexxx rationalized that since the gay marriage does not fit with the majority's religious view, it should not be legal. I agree with this, but think as is, it is very much a civil rights issue. "Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood" -Coretta Scott King
So you DO agree that equal rights apply to marriage. Good to know. BigTexx, you can't marry your dog or your rock because that would not be a mutual loving relationship between two people (a marriage is a union). Churches can already choose to marry two gay people. If a gay couple is religious they should be able to get married in their church, if the church agrees to it. And please don't call me "sweetie." We good? Thanks...
The Bible is also quite strong in its support of slavery and the stoning of adulterers, do you agree with the Bible in those aspects? Do you believe that God wants certain people to be slaves and servants of others?
The Bible does not specifically condemn the practice of slavery. It gives instructions on how slaves should be treated (Deuteronomy 15:12-15; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1), but does not outlaw the practice altogether
So your defense is that you just toss out the window anything that the Bible says? Is that what you're telling me, woman?
Thats all well and good, but the issue is not as black and white as hating gays and wanting gays to get married. There are many people who do not hate gays but do not support gay marriage.
ok....so what are you saying? The Bible not only does not "specifically condemn," but it clearly condones slavery. Does that mean slavery should exist today because the Bible says so? "But you may get servants as property from among the nations round about; from them you may take men-servants and women-servants." Leviticus 25:44 There's also NT verses about how to treat slaves.
You don't have to hate gays to be homophobic. I don't see what place the bible should have in the discussion of the legality of same sex marriage anyways.
Its assumed that if you oppose gay marriage you're a homophobe. That is simply not true. I accept gay people as freely as I accept jews and ethiopians.
The RR tends to be pretty boastful and proud about keeping religion IN the government... so I doubt they would swallow the pill you describe.
Seriously, I feel like I'm watching a debate from the 1700s or some time before the separation of state and religion was fleshed out. Either way, nice to see. Never understood why certain people want the state to have the power to ban certain people from marrying each other but then turn around and demand complete economic freedom. gooo Maine I guess.
Kind of a 50/50 thing. For example, what if everyone turned gay in the world? The world would be over, literally. Just saying.
Religious opponents of gay marriage use the Bible as a tool for hatred. It's been used before as a tool for hatred. People who take the Bible literally and don't take into account that it was written by men for a different culture thousands of years ago should look at other verses about different social issues of the time. You can't just pick and choose which verses to believe. You either believe everything in the Bible, or you choose to look at it through cultural lenses.
Many consider homosexuality extremely immoral. Why would they want to legalize homos getting married?
