This will be a better movie than book. The story's great, but the writing stinks. When it comes to prose, Brown is a hack. Ending each two-page chapter with a cliffhanger? Please. It's a cheap gimmick. And if I had a dollar for every one of his adverbs.... Lazy, lazy writing. Sorry. I know this is a bitter, unattractive, pointless post. I just really hated the "Ohmygod isn't this a GREAT book!@!?@?" phase last year. Great story? Yes. Great concept? Yes. But the characters are tissue thin, the cliches swim through every page, and the dialogue seems to be written by George Lucas. all that said, because of the great subject matter (which Brown ripped from others, btw), I'm looking forward to the movie.
I'm hoping you're right.... but a lot of the "codes" and "riddles" don't really translate to the big screen. I felt those were much better in print, where you could look at it and think about it. Same goes for the way they describe a lot of the artwork. I found myself going online to look at the pictures as they were being described word for word in the book. Now, I know the movie won't have a problem showing the images... but unless they're going to spend a good 5 minutes describing each one, and showing nothing on the screen but the painting, then the viewer really isn't going to get the most out of it. That being said, I'm sure they'll find a way to pull it off.... I just know that its very hard to make the movie better than the book. The only one that I've seen thus-far is the Godfather.
This book is the novel equivalent of a popcorn flick. Start out with an intriguing premise, put in some suspense a few plot twists and bam. You got a bestseller. It's like Grisham. I'm not a fan but he's really found a formula that works.
