Kicking the Mavericks out of the playoffs would be enough for me to consider this a successful season.
Does it piss anyone else off how much breathing room they have in the East? If your'e in the top of the West, you sneeze and youre the 8th seed.
Well.. right now we are the 4th seed and Portland is losing to Indiana as we speak. If Portland loses they will have 23 losses, big game tomorrow with Dallas and New Orleans then as New Orleans has won 5 straight and has 22 losses too. That leaves Denver (who also has 22 losses)... and Utah plays Denver on Friday (I think)... So big games coming up.
Nelson is out for Orlando... Orlando still got no problem being at the top 3. KG is out for several games... Celtics still got no problem being at the top 3. West, Big Z, Gibson, B. Wallace are out for several games... Cleveland still got no problem being at the top 3. Then you have the Bucks who have been hit by the injury bug, and yet they are in the 8th spot. What?
We've got 23 losses now ... in the loss column, we're six - seventh. With our tough schedule, I wouldn't be surprised at us ending up as the eighth seed

The Rockets fought hard and gave the Jazz a close contest but were ultimately undone by missed free throws and flops. Deron Williams is one clutch player, but I hate the way Utah flops for the refs. The Jazz’s style of play really takes away from the game, but it unfortunately works for them. The Jazz have won 9 straight now, including 4 victories over quality teams, so there’s no shame in the loss. The Jazz are only 1 game behind Enver for the division lead, and the Nuggets play the Blazers on Thursday and Utah on Friday. I think there will be a shakeup of the division leader by the end of the week. We still have another shot in Utah March 24 to take the tie break from the Jazz. I think this game gives us some things to build on. Yao had a monster game despite fouling out. Kyle Lowry is looking better every game, and I think Rick will use him more against Williams next time. We also won’t be coming off a game the night before. I predict a victory in that game. The loss drops us back to the #5 spot in the standings. The race in the West is tightening up with only 2 games separating seeds 3-8, and only 3.5 games between 2-8. I said this last year, but it’s like the standings are written on an etch-a-sketch and the Basketball Gods shake it every night. There will be quite a bit of fluctuation in the standings every night, so don’t get too worked up if we rise or fall a few spots. Apparently Mark Cuban didn’t like losing to the short-handed Thieves the other night. The Mercurial One gave his team quite the tongue lashing and promised wholesale changes if they didn’t start playing better. The Mavs certainly looked inspired in winning a close game over the visiting Spurs. The teams split the season series 2-2. Josh Howard had 27 points and 7 boards, and Dirk had another good game with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 37 points, while Tim Duncan chipped in with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Spurs have lost 3 of their last 4 with the lone win being over the hapless Clippers. They lose a Magic Number. Even though they’re on their 7GoD stretch, I expected big things for the Suns after they picked up Stromile Swift. Alas, it wasn’t enough to save them as Shaq lost to another of his former teams. Dwayne Wade had 35 points and 16 assists in leading the Heat to a 135-129 victory over the visiting Suns. Steve Nash had 29 points and 10 assists while Shaq put up 22 and 8. The Suns can definitely score, but they sure look like they can’t hang with good teams (hopefully that's the case on Friday when they come to Houston). They’re now 1-2 on this seven game stretch and 3 full games out of the playoffs. The Suns lose a Magic Number. It looked like the Pacers were going to knock off another Western Conference Contender, but Brandon Roy hit two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to rally the Blazers to a 107-105 victory after being down by 14 points. Roy finished with 28 points, and LeMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and 7 rebounds. It’s the third straight win for the Blazers, who can take the division lead tomorrow with a win in Enver. I’ll be glad when the scrub teams have been eliminated from the Playoffs, but until then I have to cover Cellar Dweller battles. There were not one, not two, but three of these epic contests on tap tonight. The Thieves went to Washington (I’m sure there’s a political joke in there, but this isn’t D&D) and beat the Wizards to rack up their first 3 game winning streak. Congrats, Scottie. The Bulls defeated the visiting Warriors. The win ties the Bulls for the 8th spot in the East, but when you’re 8 games under .500, you’re a Cellar Dweller. In the third game, the Grizz played another game in LA, this time against the JV team. Memphis had a much easier time with the Clippers and dispatched them quite easily. Good news! With their loss, the Clippers have been eliminated from the Playoffs, so we’re down to a board of 13. The Rockets are off on Thursday, but TNT has a pair of my favorite type of game: Contender vs. Contender. We’re guaranteed to see 2 Magic Numbers fall, and a division rival will take a hit to their division record. On tap for Thursday: Mavs at Hornets, Blazers at Nuggets
Tomorrow night's game is huge. A win and our magic number on the Suns decreases by three, right? 14 just sounds a lot closer than 17.
i always route for the lower placed team to win so we can move closer or pass the higher placed team. therefor the mavs and blazers must win! and hopefully the grizz will be eliminated from the playoffs when we play them. tank tank tank!
Yep. If we win Friday, we clinch the head to head over the Suns and take the tie break from them. That would reduce the Magic Number by 3. 14 does sound a lot closer. I think they'll be under 10 by the end of next week.
I'd rather have the lower placed team lose so that the Rockets have a better chance of just making the playoffs. If the Rockets go on a mini-slump, they are watching round one instead of playing in it.
What do you guys think is the magic number to clinch in the west (45,46,47.... wins)? I think 47 wins will do it.

Only 2 games going on tonight, and 2 Magic Numbers were guaranteed to drop. We stayed at the #5 spot, so all in all a good evening. The Mavs kept up with the Hornets for a half, but then it became the Chris Paul Show. Paul had another stellar performance and ignited his team in the second half to a dominating victory over the visiting Mavericks. Paul wound up with 27 points and 15 assists, including a number of the highlight reel variety. Tyson Chandler (damn you Thieves) had a double-double. It’s the sixth straight win for the Hornets, who have a creampuff schedule coming up. Dirk had 27 points and 7 rebounds in a losing effort, and Mark Cuban went through 28 throat longenzes screaming at the team after the game. The Mavs drop a Magic Number, and their division record falls to 5-7 (which could come in handy if we split the season series 2-2). Enver had the division lead on the line tonight when they hosted the Blazers. Carmelo came back from his 1 game suspension and erupted for 38 points as the Nuggets crushed Portland. The Blazers shot 33%, but I’m going to blame cold-shooting instead of any defensive effort on the part of the Nuggets. If they hold teams to low percentages for another few games, then I’ll reconsider giving them a ‘d’ back, but until then they remain Enver. It doesn’t get any easier for the Nuggets, who go to Utah Friday night. Brandon Roy had 22 points in a losing effort for the Blazers who drop a Magic Number. The Rockets return to action Friday and host the Suns. Phoenix has Steve Nash back but are just 1-2 on their brutal Seven Games of Doom stretch. The Rockets, fresh off their loss in Utah, can get another win against a Playoff Contender. I think this is a game we should win. With the exception of a victory over the Lakers in Phoenix, the Suns have looked mortal against Contenders since A’mare went down for the season. Yao needs to battle Shaq to at least a standstill, and I want to see Lowry intimidate Nash. The Suns will dare us to run a fast break, and for the first time in years, I think that’s something we can do effectively. We only play the Suns 3 times this year, so 2 victories in the head to head clinches the tie break. Friday’s game is the first of 2 cracks we get to pick up that second victory. A victory would drop all Magic Numbers 1, but would drop the Suns a total of 3 (1 for the Suns Loss, 1 for the Rocket victory, 1 for clinching the tie break over them). Also on tap for Friday: Warriors at Pistons, Wizards at Spurs, Wolves at Lakers, Nuggets at Jazz
thanks. was kinda waiting for the update. if you live in houston, i guess you're a night owl just like me.
I think the Suns will wind up with 46 wins, and we'll have the tie break over them. So 46 should do it. I am a night owl, but I live in Seattle so it's not quite as late. By the time I put my daughter to sleep and have dinner with my wife, it's usually around midnight my time before I can get the update posted.
