I thought this was going to be a quiet night, especially after last night’s marquee matchups. Then we get news on Yao’s foot, which hopefully won’t keep him out of the next 2 games. We also got a shocker in Utah. No change to the Rockets’ Magic Number Chart, but it’s looking increasingly like we won’t face the Jazz. Saturday’s Games The Jazz are in total freefall right now. After losing 5 of 6, featuring 5 road games against Contenders, the Jazz looked to regroup in the safe confines of Utah where they are difficult to beat. Even worse, they were facing a short-handed Warriors squad playing the second night of a back-to-back. I don’t feel so bad about that close Rocket victory over the Warriors now, because the Warriors took control of this game early and held on for an enormous upset. I guess the Magic 8 Ball came up with the wrong side again. Sorry, Jazz. You suck! No win for you! C.J. Watson had a career high 38 points to go along with 9 assists, and Rob Kurz scored 21 off the bench for the Warriors. The Warriors are kind of on a roll, and I have high hopes for them when they catch the Spurs in GolXden State on the second night of their back-to-back. Carlos Boozer had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Deron Williams added 26 points and 14 assists before leaving the court with an abdominal or rib injury. The Jazz are simply imploding right now and could be without Williams if his injury is serious. That’s 2 straight home losses to scrub teams for the Jazz. I certainly no longer consider their home against the Clippers a gimme, and I don’t know if they can beat the Lakers in LA even if Phil does rest the starters. The Mavs and Hornets now have a Magic Number of 2 to close the Jazz out, and one of those teams will drop it to 1 after the Hornets host the Mavs tomorrow morning (Pacific time). I’m assuming the Mavs will beat the Wolves in Dallas, so I’m pulling for the Hornets tomorrow and expect them to win. If the Jazz drop either of their final games (and I’m pretty sure they will now), they will almost certainly be the #8 seed. It’s a pretty stunning turn of events for Utah. That #3 seed is not looking bad either, since it’s pretty unlikely that the Jazz will rise above #7 now. A night after an impressive victory over the Lakers, the Blazers went to LA to face the JV team. It looked like the Blazers would roll to an easy victory, but the Clippers took a 2 points lead with 7:43 left to play. Never underestimate the power of the Clippers to blow 4th quarter leads. The Blazers responded with an 18-0 run to wrap this game up to keep pressure on Enver, Houston, and San Antonio. LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and 9 rebounds, and Joe Przybilla had 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Blazers, who have won 8 of their last 9. I’m boycotting a leaderboard entry for the Clippers because they’re not a real NBA team. Isn't this a beautiful thing to see this morning? Houston on top in the Southwest Division with two games to play in the regular season. http://stats.chron.com/nba/standings.asp
I'm so confident that if Yao is back for at least the Mavericks game and we get both games, that we WILL get the 2nd seed. I just think Denver doesn't have enough to win in Portland and then that will give us the 2nd seed.
I agree with you completely and am so confident that if we get the second seed that we can ride that all the way to the WCF! That thought alone makes me smile from ear to ear....that would be just freaking awesome after so long a drought!

I’m about to head out to the Grandparents’ for an Easter Egg Hunt with my daughter, but here’s a quick update after the entertaining Mavs-Hornets game. Hornets look pretty good for the #6 spot. If the Jazz lose in LA, they are almost certainly the #8 seed now. I really hope Boston beats Cleveland in the next game so the Lakers have reason major incentive to win that game. And it sounds like Yao will be playing the last 2 games. I’m really starting to feel like this could be a season of destiny for us. A golden path to the WCF and possibly the Finals seems in the cards. I’ll have a full write up after all the evening games are over. If we win out, Denver loses in Portland and LA beats Utah, it would seem clearly that the stars are aligning in our favor!
If we can win these last two games, we're potentially 2nd seed, at least 3rd, with virtually no probability of facing the Jazz in the 1st round. Its a great feeling when you don't have to count on other people to lose and the "we control our own destiny" cliche doesn't actually mean "we have to win something like 10 games in a row to get to the seed we want". Just two games. Two games against tough teams, but they are very beatable teams.
It appears that the 3rd seed is the best seed for us. The 2nd seed has too high a percentage of facing the Jazz in the first round. We still get to avoid the Lakers for two rounds. And the way we matchup against the 2nd, 6th, and 7th seeds we should be favorites even without home court advantage. We may even be able to rest Yao for a game or two if we don't try for the 2nd seed. All in all the 3rd seed is the seed I'm most comfortable with.
I forgot to mention; the Lakers are the one and only team in the West who has clinched their division.
A long shot I know, but here is what I am hoping for. Rockets win out, Nuggets lose to Portland. Round 1: (Winners in bold) 1. Lakers vs 8. Utah 2. Rockets vs 7. New Orleans 3. Nuggets vs 6. Mavericks 4. Portland vs 5. Spurs Round 2 1. Lakers vs 4. Portland 2. Rockets vs 3. Denver WC finals 2. Rockets vs. 4. Portland You could swap out New Orleans and Dallas, either one is fine with me for the first round, but the rest, that is what I would like to see. DD
