Clinched the #13 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on Feburary 28.

Well, we knew it wasn’t going to stretch to 22 games, but it was a disappointing end to the best stretch of basketball this team has played all season. This team hits maddening funks, particularly on the road, and it caught up to them in Chicago in an ugly loss. I didn’t get to watch this game tonight, but it sounds like I didn’t miss much. Still, we need to keep an eye on the big picture. We’re still the fourth seed, and we have a winnable game on the schedule tomorrow. There are also a few Contender square offs that are guaranteed to drop some Numbers (including two grudge rematches in Lakers-Suns and Blazers-Spurs).

The only other Contender in action tonight was the Jazz, but they were playing the Suckramento Kings. The Jazz earlier in the day attended the funeral of long time owner, Larry Miller. The Kings kept in close in the first half, but the Jazz pulled away in the second half for their seventh straight win.

The only other action was a couple of Cellar Dweller battles. The Thieves snapped a 7 game losing streak, by beating the Grizzlies. I’m still trying to figure out how the Clippers beat the Celtics because they just became the latest victim of the Bobcats’ 3 game winning streak. The Celtics and Grizzlies both drop a point.

The Rockets play again tomorrow night as they travel to Minnesota to take on the Wolves. This is another game we should take, hopefully with better results. The Wolves have been dreadful since Al Jefferson went down for the season. As long as we bring some intensity and play smarter ball, we should get back to our winning ways. We can also clinch the season tie break over the Wolves with a victory, which would knock their Magic Number down 3.

Also on tap for Sunday: Lakers at Suns, Hornets at Nets, Nuggets at Pacers, Spurs at Blazers, Raptors at Mavs, Jazz at Warriors

Yep. 22 or 23 losses for seeds 4 - 8. I fully expect at least a 3 team tie at the end of the season. We really need to take these next 2 games and try to win as many tie breaks as we can down the stretch. Every game counts.

A loss to the Al Jefferson-less Wolves would make the GARM explode like never before.

People, it was one loss. It was not a fun loss, nor was it a pretty loss. But it was just one loss. It wasn't even a conference loss. Part of the purpose of this thread is to show we're still right in the mix of things despite that one loss.

This board in infamous for the doom and gloom that permeates it after a loss and the over the top euphoria that follows a win. My wife asked last night who won the game. I told her the Rockets blew a 17 point lead. She shook her head and asked "collective suicide on Clutch Fans?" I definitely understand the disappointment, but the sky has not fallen.

In my last State of the Race, I expected the Rockets to blow 2 of their Probable games, and I still have them with the #4 seed and home court in the first round.

I like what I'm seeing of this team when they play their best, and we still have 23 games to finetune that, grab a good seed, and give somebody hell in the first round. But keep in mind there will be brutal competition for seeds 4-8. We'll probably fall a few seeds in 1 game at some point and also rise a few spots with a single win.

Chin up, Clutch Fans. Tonight we'll see some serious Number dropping.

Phoenix beating the Lakers this afternoon was unexpected. Hope we get tonight's game against the T-wolves!

Just chiming in to let you know how much I'm enjoying your thread.

It is one of only two things I enjoy in GARM, posting my own threads and reading yours.

Clinched the #12 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on March 1.

It was a busy night for the Western Conference on Sunday night with the top 11 teams in action. The Rockets got their victory, and the top 3 seeds all lost. Seeds 5 – 9 didn’t cooperate as all 5 of them won their games to keep pace with the Rockets. It’s going to be a dogfight for positioning down the stretch.

The Rockets played a choppy first half but locked down in the second to beat the Wolves. I would have liked to see a more dominant game from start to finish, but I’ll take a road win considering how poorly we’ve fared away from home over the last six weeks. It was great to Carl Freaking Landry playing again, and Aaron Brooks was solid with 22 points and 10 assists. All Magic Numbers drop 1.

The win clinches the season tie break over the Wolves, who drop a total of 3 points with the loss. Our victory tonight also closes out the LA Clippers, who have been pretty dreadful this season (except that damn loss in LA  ). Up next: the Grizzlies and the #11 seed.

Phoenix got steamrolled Thursday night in LA. Tonight they got the Lakers in their own building as they begin their stretch of 7 Games of Doom (7GoD from now on). The Suns were without Steve Nash for a 3rd straight game, but they didn’t need him as Shaq went crazy again, scoring 33 in a win over the visiting Lakers. Matt Barnes had 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists for the Suns, while Kobe had 49 and the Spanish Inquisition had 30 for the Lakers. The Suns are 1-0 on this brutal leg and have won 2 straight overall. The Lakers drop another Magic Number.

Portland was also looking for a little revenge after getting spanked by Tony Parker and French Legion last week. This time they faced the Spurs in Portland, and despite Tim Duncan’s return, the Blazers walloped the Spurs. The Spurs sat Duncan down in the fourth with the Blazers up by 29. Brandy Roy and LeMarcus Aldridge each scored 26 for the victorious Blazers. The Spurs drop another Magic Number and are now only 2 games up on the Rockets for the Southwest division lead (although they are up 3 in the loss column).

I knew it couldn’t last. We’re back to our old familiar Enver Nuggets, who traveled to Indiana to play the dinged up Pacers. Fresh off a dominating victory over the Lakers, Enver allowed offensive juggernauts Jarrett Jack and Troy Murphy to combine for 50 points in another loss to a lottery-bound Eastern Conference team. Enver loses an additional Magic Number in addition to their “d.”

I’m still bitter over the rescinded Tyson Chandler trade. It certainly seems to have ignited a spark under the Hornets, who played clutch down the stretch to eek out a victory over the Nets. David West had 32 points and 11 boards, and Chris Paul had 14 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, and a couple of last minute steals for the Hornets who have won 4 straight games.

Chris Bosh was talking a week ago about getting nasty and making a playoff push, but the Raptors have not fared well on their road trip against the Western Conference. Sunday night was no exception as Dirk had 24 points and 10 boards and Jason Kidd dished out 15 assists in a comfortable win over Toronto. Jason Kidd hit 10,000 career assists tonight, one of only 4 NBA players to achieve that milestone, and Jason Terry returned to action after missing a month with a broken hand.

The Jazz are rolling right now, and it’ll take more than a bad Warriors team to stop them. Deron Williams had 20 assists and Duck Ass Okur had 23 points as the Jazz cruised to a 112-104 victory over Golden State. It’s the 8th straight victory for the Jazz, who are now only 2 games out of the Northwest division lead. Golden State drops an additional Magic Number.

On tap for Monday: Hornets at 76ers, Mavs at Thieves, Spurs at Clippers

Great stuff Scribo!! This really deserves to be sticky'ed. It goes to show that not all Houston fans act like sway-with-the-wind prepubescent boys.

why do i have a hunch that we'd play in the 1st round against utah again? 3 is a charm and we'd be victorious.

Only one thing is sure that we will play in the playoffs and all these mean nothing when the playoffs start.

In addition, we are 24-10 against the west, which is only worse than the Lakers and the Spurs, and I take this statistic as a signal of how deep a team will go into the playoffs.

Finally we at least have a sweet home, don't we? ;)

If I was only allowed to read one thread on this board, this most probably would be it.

Even the stickied gameplay or post threads now contain a high quantity of "non-posts" and you can only laugh at or ridicule them so much.

Thank you Scribo, for the insightful and delightful analysis.

Thanks!

It's Latin for "I write therefore I am". That's the name of the publishing company I started to print my first novel, The Ghost Hunters.

In addition to this thread, I'm working on a novel called "The Sun and the Swan," which the first book of a multi-book series. Of course, I'm writing at the pace of Martin and Jordan these days, but I've been getting some quality writing time in of late so we'll see...

Clinched the #12 seed

It was a light night of action on Monday. The Rockets were off, but 3 Contenders were playing. Unfortunately they collectively drew a pair of Cellar Dwellers and a sputtering 76ers team. I thought we might get our first night of no Magic Number movement, but never underestimate the power of the Mavs to suck.

Don’t blame Mark Cuban. The feisty Mavs owner assembled the full kit of Thieves Beanie Babies and busted out the voodoo needles. It was enough to get Jeff Green and Kevin Durant out the lineup, but it wasn’t enough to save his precious Mavs. Russell Westbrook had a triple double and Nenad Krstic had 26 points for the Thieves as they shocked the visiting Mavericks. Dirk had 28 points and Jason Terry added 20 in the loss. Dallas loses a Magic Number. The Mavericks draw the Spurs and Hornets next, so we’ll definitely see some divisional Magic Numbers fall.

David West just got player of the week, and he continued to dominate on Monday, racking up 30 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Paul chipped in 16 points, 12 assists, and a clutch last minute 3 pointer to seal a victory over a 76ers team in freefall. It’s the fifth straight win for the Hornets who have risen to the #5 spot.

The Spurs got hammered their last two games, so they did what any team in turmoil would do: they went to Clipperland! That was enough to get the Spurs back to their winning ways as they demolished the Clippers in LA. Tony Paker had 26 points and 10 assists, and Tim Duncan got back into his groove with 18 points, 12 rebound, and 6 assists before sitting out the fourth quarter as the Spurs led by 28.

The Rockets return to the safe confines of the Toyota Center Tuesday night to host the Toronto Raptors. This is definitely a game we should win. The Raptors are 0-2 in the midst of a brutal 5 game schedule against Contenders. Those 2 losses weren’t pretty either. Hopefully the Rockets get back to the mindset they had on their 6 game winning streak.

Also on tap for Tuesday: Suns at Magic, Nuggets at Pistons, Warriors at Wolves, Grizzlies at Lakers

Thanks for the continual updates...

I hope we can clinch a spot earlier this year than last year.

You guys want to know what is sad about this thread?

1) That it only has 17 five stars out of 7K+ views.
2) It always trails to the second page almost every day
3) That threads with no substance like: "Yo Stevie...where you at?", "Yao loves butter", etc could stay at the top of the stack over quality threads like this one.

SES...great job as usual!
