we cant hold the jazz for some reason, deron is too big for brooks and memo is fast and boozer has a shot. Lets take on the blazers!!
by your logic, whats the point of even making the playoffs? every team is going to lose to the lakers anyways. we're not going to win the championship or the western conference this year. this season's success will be defined by whether we win a playoff series.
I didn't mean to sound it that way.Getting out of the 1st round will be a step in the right direction.
The hypothetical in play here is if we could choose between a 1st round matchup with the Jazz and a 2nd round matchup with the Lakers, which do you choose? I choose the Jazz every time. You make it sound like we have no shot at beating them. This is the same team we took to game 7 with no backup PG and no PF to speak of, and the same team we took to game 6 with no Yao, no Alston and Tmac and Battier playing hobbled. They are the toughest matchup, but we can beat them. If we had a shot in hell to beat the Lakers, I would choose to avoid the Jazz. But we havn't shown any indication that we can stay on the same court with them.
i would rather have us advance and then get swept by the lakers, then to lose to the jazz on our home court again.

The Return of Carl Freaking Landry It was comeback fever in Houston tonight. The Rockets knew Rafer was going to run his mouth when he returned to Houston for the first time, but they got a surprising lift when Carl Landry returned to action. With their rotation restored, the Rockets got another big victory over a hot Playoff-bound team. The defense looked great tonight, holding Dwight Howard to just 13 points, but the offense was a bit spotty. I’m looking at you, Ron. The Rockets buckled down and moved the ball a bit crisper in the fourth quarter, but I hope they play with more consistent poise these last few games. Still it was a solid win over the 4th best team in the NBA. All Magic Numbers drop 1. The Rockets get a day off before a back-to-back against the Kings and Warriors on the road. Race for the Southwest Update A night after finding out Ginobili would be gone for the season, the Spurs traveled to OKC to face a Thieves team that had beaten them twice in the past few weeks. The Thieves gave the Spurs a run for their money, but strong performances by Duncan, Parker, and Gooden proved too much and fueled the Spurs to a needed victory. It was a good win for the Spurs, but not exactly a dominating one. I’m very curious how they fare when they host the Blazers tomorrow night and if Popovich will sit Duncan. Tim Duncan put up 25 points and 15 boards, Tony Parker added 21 points and 10 assists, and Drew Gooden scored 20 off the bench for the Spurs. Kevin Durant put up 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists for the Thieves. We’re still a ½ game behind the Spurs with us down 1 in the loss column. The Spurs also picked up a Conference win. The Rockets are now finished with their non-conference games, and they are 1 loss down to the Spurs in our Conference record. If the Rockets make up a game and tie the Spurs in the overall record, the Spurs and Rockets will have identical Conference Records. Like the head-to-head record, Criterion 3 is now a push. With our strong advantage in Criterion 4, if we tie in the divisional record, we are nearly a lock to win the overall tie break. Criterion 3: Conference Record Rockets Conference Record: 32-16 Rockets Conference Record Magic Number to Tie: 5 Rockets Conference Record Magic Number to Win: 6 Spurs Conference Record: 32-15 Spurs Conference Record Magic Number to Tie: 4 (-1) Spurs Conference Record Magic Number to Win: 5 (-1) Rockets Conference Games: @Kings, @Warriors, Hornets, @Mavs Spurs Conference Games: Blazers, Jazz, @Kings, @Warriors, Hornets For more information about the race for the Southwest Division crown, please read Post 772. The Rest of Tuesday’s Games Forget David West and Chris Paul. Rasual Butler is becoming the savior of the Hornets. The Heat looked to have this game wrapped up with a late 3 point lead, but Rasual Butler once again stepped up and drained a 3 at the buzzer to force overtime. David West then took over and guided the Hornets to victory. Chris Paul had 26 points and 9 assists, David West added 20 points, and Peja Stojakovich scored 24 for the Hornets, who stay a game up on Utah for the #6 seed. Dwayne Wayne put up 32 points, 7 boards, and 6 assists for the Heat, who stay just a ½ game up on Phili for the #5 spot in the East. I figured the Blazers would capitalize when they played a bad Grizz team, especially coming off a loss to Houston and with a road game at San Antonio coming up. Instead, the Grizz led nearly the entire game and looked like they were going to score the upset. Brandon Row, however, put on another clutch fourth quarter performance, scoring 13 points and getting a key steal as the Blazers rallied to pull off the comeback. It was a good win for the Blazers, but it wasn’t the dominating ball they were playing a week ago. LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 points and 8 boards, and Brandon Roy scored 24 for the Blazers. O.J. Mayo scored 31, and Rudy Gay added 19 for the Grizz. The Lakers started off a bit slow before they laid a smackdown on Suckramento. This game wasn’t close in the second half as the Laker starters sat on the bench for a scrub-filled fourth quarter. Pau Gasol had 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Kobe scored 22 for the Lakers, who have a Magic Number of 5 to clinch the best record in the NBA over the Cavs. Spencer Hawes had 21 points and 15 rebounds, and Jason Thompson added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Suckramento, who maintain their 1.5 game lead on Washington and the Clippers for the worst record in the NBA. ESPN has a pair of huge Contender Smackdowns tomorrow. The Blazers-Spurs game has huge implications with a tie break on the line. If the Blazers win, the 3-5 spots will be Rockets, Blazers, Spurs. We’d also clinch a better record against Western Conference Playoff teams (Criterion 4) over the Spurs. If the Blazers lose they could fall to #6. The Jazz-Mavs game could well decide who is #7 and #8. The Jazz own the tie break with the Mavs, but Dallas could move into a tie with only 4 games left. And please Mavs and Hornets, somebody please eliminate the Suns tomorrow. On tap for Wednesday: Blazers at Spurs, Suns at Hornets, Thieves at Nuggets, Jazz at Mavs
It was a rough night of scoreboard watching. At one point, the Hornets, Spurs, and Blazers were all losing late ... yet all three came back to win.
hornets better win that game to fend off jazz. luckily they won. rox will probably beat hornets in game 81(they would be away in Toyota center on a 2nd night of b2b), and they still have 2 games vs mavs, 1 game vs spurs, 1 game vs suns. if they lost this heat game, how could they stay at #6? rox is about the get #3 now. we want them rox and blazer and spurs are fighting hot for 3,4,5. hornets and jazz and mavs are fighting hot for 6,7,8. best case sennario for rox is: rox 3, spurs 4, blazers 5, hornets 6, mavs 7, jazz 8. we need hornets and mavs to win as many as possible now except vs rox to make that happen.
There is still a good chance that the Spurs will hold on. It all depends if the Rockets can run the tables and win all their games. Not only that, the Spurs play all contenders at home. This does work in favor for the Spurs. I still see the Spurs losing two more games. I'm not sure who we should root for on Wednesday when it comes to the Spurs and Blazers game. If the Blazers win, all three teams will be tied. I would rather see Dallas beat the Jazz and for the Hornets to lose as well. I believe the Nuggets have the 2nd seed for sure now. They had the easy a schedule compared to everyone else.
I made a misstatement there. The Spurs would still have the tie break over us due to their 1/2 game lead in the divisional tie break. So it would be Spurs, Rockets, Blazers if the Division leader rule holds up.
I've been looking at the schedule, and its kind of weird. You have the Mavs playing Utah today, and then the Mavs get to play New Orleans twice. So there are a lot of scenarios where we're not facing Utah. If the Mavs are bad enough to lose to the Jazz, then they could lose to the Hornets twice also. Or if Hornets are bad enough to lose to the Jazz, then the Mavs could potentially beat them twice also... and thats basically the gist of their hard schedule.
we have a fairly good chance to be in the #2-#3 zone, instead of #4. that will make us not play the lakers until the wcf.
The chance for the seed #2 is very low, plus that we do not want to face the Jazz flop if they are at 7. We could get 3, but not worse than 4. The seed #3 is good enough in my book, still will not face the lakers until the later.
Well, maybe not that low. Nuggets will likely lose at LA on Thursday because LA is still chasing Cleveland, and then Nuggets are in Portland for the last game and if they lose that one (not too improbable) we would take the 2nd seed provided that we win all 4 of our games.
It isn't low at all, if somehow the Spurs must lose 1 game, Nuggets can easily lose @LAL and @Port, and the Rockets must win out, with those factors we are #2. Seems fairly possible. I'm picking Spurs losing @GS (hopefully though they just lose tonight vs. Portland and make it easy).
Well, both you and Q have a point, we could win all four games, and Nuggets have to play LAL and Port, yes, our chance is not low anymore after last night win.
New orleans plays Dallas twice, two other playoff teams, and phoenix as its last 5 games. New Orleans could EASILY slide into 7th or even 8th.
